Free perennials for Osterholz-Scharmbeck: A step to climate protection!

In Osterholz-Scharmbeck, the city implements a successful initiative to promote biodiversity. In the case of a recently carried out free perennial campaign, more than 700 citizens received plants free of charge that should help adapt to climate change. Mayor Torsten Rohde described the measure as a "small contribution to adapting to climate change", while the citizens were enthusiastic about the campaign. Anja Brinkmann, one of these citizens, was on site with her four -year -old son Alec to pick up local plant species for your garden in Garlstedt.

The plants were spoiled with urgently needed rain during the delivery, which also raised the mood of the participants. The event took place at the town hall, where Rohde and employees of the city administration supported the campaign. Frieder Lüßen, responsible for urban planning, emphasized the benefits of the plants for biodiversity, since they serve as a source of food for insects.

successful perennial campaign since 2020

This perennial campaign is not the first of its kind in Osterholz-Scharmbeck. The city has been conducting such events regularly since 2020. A total of 725 orders were accepted using an online form. To finance this campaign, the city provided an amount of 30,000 euros from the city budget.

The costs are part of a larger project to adapt urban rooms to climate change, which has a total of EUR 2.7 million, of which 300,000 euros come from the municipality. As part of the funding project, 900 trees, 3000 shrubs, 52,000 square meters of flowering areas and 4500 square meters of perennial areas are to be created.

biodiversity in cities

The initiative in Osterholz-Scharmbeck is in a larger context of nature conservation in German cities. The NABU explains that the biological diversity in urban areas is often larger than in comparable forest areas. This diversity not only includes biodiversity, but also a variety of habitat and genetic resources that are important for the ecosystem. One of the future -oriented goals is to secure biological diversity and the creation of networked biotope systems in urban development.

Germany pursues a national strategy for biological diversity that was adopted in 2007. This strategy comprises 330 individual goals and almost 430 measures to protect the habitats and species. Current challenges such as intensive agriculture and the use of pesticides endanger biodiversity, which makes targeted measures inevitable.

The Federal Environment Ministry Meanwhile promotes various concepts for sustainable use and protecting biological diversity in Germany by the Federal program biological diversity . This program aims to create nature experience spaces and to promote cooperation between the countries, municipalities and nature conservation associations.

Overall, the initiative in Osterholz-Scharmbeck shows how cities can actively contribute to promoting biodiversity. Such measures are not only a step towards climate protection, but also an important sign for the future of urban habitats.
