Hanover starts innovative initiative for sustainable urban design

Hannover-Seelhorst, Deutschland - The research project Hulls-Hannover Hildesheim Urban Living Lab for Sustainability began on June 3, 2025 with a kick-off event in Hannover-Seelhorst. Around 100 participants took part in this participation festival, while the grill buffet and open discussions were the scope of the event. The aim of the project is the concrete and everyday design of sustainable urban development, starting with a housing estate in which Gundlach Bau und Immobilien GmbH & Co. KG will modernize eleven buildings with a total of 133 apartments by 2030. These modernizations include the installation of photovoltaic systems, heat pumps, increases and energetic renovations.

The settlement in Hannover-Seelhorst will act as a model quarters to gain experience and to transfer them to other residential complexes in the region. Comprehensive scientific support is carried out by the University of Hildesheim, the Hanover University of Applied Sciences and the Hawk Hildesheim/Holzminden/Göttingen. Particular attention is paid to the active participation of the residents, whose perspectives and needs should flow into the project.

goals of sustainable development

The Hulls project aims to develop socially, ecologically, economically and digitally sustainable approaches. This combines research, business and civil society in order to promote sustainable urban development. The need for sustainable urban mobility, as described in the research agenda for sustainable mobility, plays a central role. Here, traffic -related emissions and resource consumption are to be minimized in order to improve the quality of the living conditions for all population groups.

In order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) set by the 2030 agenda, changes in user behavior and the introduction of low -carbon fuels are necessary. In this context, safety in road traffic is also emphasized as an important goal. In addition, access to sustainable transport systems should be guaranteed for everyone by 2030.

The start of the Hulls project marks the beginning of a long-term, scientifically accompanied modernization process, which should not only improve the quality of life of the residents, but also set important impulses for the transformation of urban mobility and development concepts.
