Conflict in the Middle East: Israel is facing an attack on Iran?

Diego Garcia, Indischer Ozean - In the past few days, the tensions between Iran and Israel have increased dramatically. Israel under President Benjamin Netanyahu has openly threatened military campaigns against Iranian nuclear facilities. These threats were accompanied by reports on the relocation of strategic bombers and fighter jets by the United States on the military base Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. The US jets stationed there are only a few flight hours from Tehran, which further fueled the situation. The US air weapon had already stationed six B-2 starcappen bombers on Diego Garcia in April, while other bombers and f-15e strike Eagles were to be added, as our Central Europe reported.

Official justification of the US government for this military presence is the protection of its troops in the region. However, intelligence agency suspects that the United States is preparing for a possible military participation in an Israeli attack. The US government takes the Israeli plans seriously, and the US specialist Steve Witkoff has demanded that Iran have to completely stop its uranium enrichment. Iran, on the other hand, has decidedly rejected this claim. Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Araghchi emphasized that the right to enrichment uranium enrichment for Tehran was not negotiable.

The negotiations on the nuclear program

In parallel to the military tensions, the negotiations between Tehran and Washington continue to proceed via Iran’s nuclear program. Today, the fourth round of talks will take place in Maskat, Oman, participating in Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghtschi. The Oman conveys between the two countries after a round, originally planned for May 4, 2025, had to be postponed for logistical reasons. There are significant differences in the negotiation positions, and experts think it is unlikely that the Iranians will respond to the maximum demands of the United States, while the talks before US President Donald Trump will take place.

Trump, who is in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, had already massively threatened with bombing if there was no deal. Iran's uranium enrichment has now increased to up to 60 percent, which is a sharp deviation from the 3.67 percent agreed in the Vienna nuclear agreement. In summary, it is in the room whether Iran is moving away from his ambitions in view of the international pressure or whether he may adapt his atomic doctrine.

Change of atomic doctrine in response to threats

Iranian political leadership has a threatening signaling that in the event of an attack on her nuclear facilities, it would be willing to change its atomic doctrine. Kamal Charrasi, advisor to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, expressed that this change in military doctrine was threatening in the air if the existence of Iran is endangered. However, Charrasi made it clear that Iran did not intend to build nuclear weapons, but could be forced to rethink the deterrent. These developments are not surprising because the tensions between Israel and Iran have increased again in the past few months, among other things after a retaliation attack in Iran, in which around 300 drones and rockets were fired on Israel.

The confrontation between Iran and Israel against the background of the nuclear program is worried about the international community, since Israel has been warning of Iran's alleged ambitions for years to develop nuclear weapons. The time emphasizes that the Iranian leadership firmly claims to use its nuclear facilities for peaceful purposes, while western states fear the opposite. The pressure on Tehran could continue to grow, in particular with a possible escalation of the military disputes and political pressure from Washington.

The upcoming negotiations and the impending military escalation illustrate how fragile the situation in the Middle East is and how decisive the next steps of the participating states will be.
