Heavy mass carambolage on A4 near Cologne: traffic jam and injured!
On Tuesday morning, June 3, 2025, a heavy mass carambolage occurred on the A4 motorway near Cologne, which led to a considerable traffic chaos. In a section between the Frechen-Nord rest area and the Kerpen motorway junction, several vehicles collided. A total of seven vehicles were involved in the accident, with at least one person being seriously injured. Rescue helicopters immediately landed at the scene of the accident to take the injured people to a hospital.
The collision led to a traffic jam towards Aachen of at least five kilometers. Motorists had to adapt to long delays in rush hour traffic, and the police called for the area to avoid the area. In addition, there were reports of animals that ran on the road in the opposite direction of travel, which was additional dangers for traffic.
black ice ensures further accidents
In the days before, accidents increased due to black ice in the region around Cologne. Numerous traffic disruptions were reported, especially on Wednesday morning, February 5. The Oberbergische and the Rheinisch-Bergische Kreis were particularly affected, which led to many accidents. The A4 motorway had to be completely blocked between Overath and Engelskirchen in both directions, which lasted until around 11.30 a.m. before the route could be released.
A total of 46 traffic accidents were registered in the Oberberg district. There were also numerous collisions in Wermelskirchen and Burscheid. A stray vehicle tipped into a ditch due to black ice in Odenthal. In the Rheinisch-Bergische Kreis, around 24 accident traffic traffic was also documented, and on the A4 between the Reichshof and Gummersbach there was a mass carambolage with 20 vehicles involved. Three people suffered injuries and the salvage work lasted several hours due to the large number of vehicles to be reserved.
The police warned of smooth roads and appealed to the drivers to drive carefully. The German Weather Service also published a warning of freezing rain, especially in the mountain country, which increased the risk of black ice. The conditions should be better at lunchtime, but when the temperature at night is falling, the smoothness could return, which required additional caution.
