Bridge between Bamberg and Strullendorf remains permanently closed!

In the district of Bamberg, a bridge over the B505 has been closed to traffic since May 9, 2025. During a regular review, serious damage was found that endanger the safety of the bridge. The closure affects the B22 between Bamberg and Strullendorf. During this time, a structural engineer was commissioned to inspect and evaluate the bridge in detail. The final test report was not yet available on June 5, 2025, but the State Building Office Bamberg made it clear in a message that the recalculation showed that the bridge could no longer accommodate traffic loads.

The need for permanent blocking became essential to ensure the safety of all road users. A diversion concept is already in force that redirect traffic via Roßdorf am Forst and the A73. The diversions for agricultural vehicles and non-motorway-capable traffic are signposted on site. Despite the last construction work and regular exams, the bridge, which was built in 1963, was no longer able to renovate, which made the demolition necessary in the course of 2025. Preparations for a replacement building are already underway, with a planned construction period of around two years, which is scheduled to begin in 2026.

extensive diversions

In order to concretize the detour for traffic, the State Building Office provides information about various routes that can be used. Vehicles that are not capable of motorcycle are run either via Strullendorf and the ST 2188 to Amlingstadt and further over Geisfeld to Bamberg or on the road -capable roads via the ST 2244 from Strullendorf to the B 505, which leads to the A73. The traffic from Pommersfelden to Bamberg uses the A73 and the Bamberg-Ost junction, while vehicles have to leave the A73 to Strullendorf at the Hirschaid junction.

bridge safety and legal framework conditions

The situation around the bridge illustrates the importance of regular bridge tests. The principle is the standard DIN 1076, which defines regulations for the examination and maintenance of engineering structures. This standard provides for visual tests annually and comprehensive main tests every six years. The increase in damage in Germany, also due to incidents such as the collapse of the Dresden Carol Bridge in September 2024, emphasizes the need for these regular checks. A Federal Court of Justice decision of February 15, 2024 has also shown that contractual clauses must now be revised in construction projects, which means that the client leads to adjust their contract patterns. The legal framework is just as important as the technical requirements to ensure the safety of the bridges.

The bridge renovation requires careful planning and the right resources to meet the high security standards. The structural measures that are due in Bamberg are part of a comprehensive approach to maintaining and security of transport infrastructure in Germany.
