Henning Hönen remains FDP boss: New era for North Rhine-Westphalia!

Sternstr. 44, 40479 Düsseldorf, Deutschland - Henning Höne remains chairman of the FDP parliamentary group in North Rhine-Westphalia. In his confirmation, he received 11 votes in favor and 1 no voice. The faction has decided that the board will remain in office until the next state election in 2027. Hönen, who is 38 years old and a trained business economist, has been a member of the Düsseldorf state parliament for 13 years and has been active in the FDP for two decades. In May 2023, he was also elected to the deputy team of the new federal party leader Christian Dürr. In the 2022 state election, the FDP achieved 5.9 percent of the vote, while the AfD received 5.4 percent, with both factions on 12 MPs in the state parliament.

Hönen is also the state party leader of the FDP in North Rhine-Westphalia, a position that he has with a narrow result of 54.5 percent approval in the election. He received a total of 208 votes, while 157 voted against him and 17 abstained. The mood during his election process was surrounded by mixed reactions: party friends expressed both anger and disillusionment on the situation of the party, which is also reflected in the words of Markus Hafke, the parliamentary managing director, which described the result as an expression of the frustration after the state election. RP-Online reports that the mood in Bielefeld was more of a behavior, while Höne about future focuses such as education, Digitization and energy policy spoke.

Höne's challenges as parliamentary group leader

The challenges in front of which the FDP is facing cannot be overlooked. After a dramatic decline in votes and the number of MPs, the party has to reorganize strategically. Höne's predecessor, Joachim Stamp, described the necessary restart, while internal criticism of the approach to the CDU was also loud before the election. In the current parliamentary group meeting, Hönen presented a strong commitment to the party's liberal beliefs and campaigned for an open ear for the concerns of the members.

As Secretary General, Moritz Körner has the task of representing the party in this tense situation. He had received an approval of 64.4 percent in his re -election. Together with the three new deputies Nicole Westing, Michael Terwiesche and Katrin Helling-Plahr, Hönen will play a central role in the next legislative period in which the FDP wants to define its political goals more sharply.

The Free Democratic Party, State Association of North Rhine-Westphalia e.V., has its headquarters in Sternstr. 44 in Düsseldorf. The contacts are clearly regulated, and the party strives to regain the trust of voters through clear communication and concrete action. External criticism, especially of opposition parties, as well as upcoming election spending will significantly shape the challenge for Hönen and his team in the coming months.
