Toby from illegal puppy transport finds new home in Cologne!
Köln-Dellbrück, Deutschland - Toby, a dog, has recently arrived after an illegal puppy transport from Bulgaria in the Cologne-Dellbrück animal shelter. Due to his reserved manner, which characterizes him as a "lovable fear rabbit", Toby initially had little interest in potential new owners. When he arrived at the shelter, he felt unsafe and looked for the closeness of other dogs to find comfort. His first trips were very stressful for him. A few weeks ago, however, new interested parties visited Toby regularly to get to know him better.
Thanks to the continuous contact with the new owners, Toby has now made confidence and now lives together with a dog buddy in a loving home that has a garden. This development is very optimistic about the team of the shelter, since Toby now has the opportunity to explore the world outside the shelter and overcome its fear.
illegal puppy transport in North Rhine-Westphalia
The situation for many animals that come from illegal transports is still worrying. A bull terrier woman called Elton, a few weeks old, was recently saved from another illegal animal transport. This transport was stopped by the police on the motorway near Eschweiler. Elton is one of 69 racial puppies found in this transport and are currently living in the Dellbrück animal shelter.
In the shelter you not only look after Elton, but also nine other puppies from the same transport. Many of these animals urgently need medical care because they are often sick and suffered from poor care. Animal shelter Bernd Schinzel reported that a total of 20 confiscated puppies are currently being cared for in the shelter. The fact that seven out of ten nurses suffered from the transport of parvovirosis and were full of parasites is shocking.
political reactions and future measures
In order to counter illegal animal trade, NRW Environment and Consumer Protection Minister Ursula Heinen-Esser visited the animal shelter and informed itself about the precarious situation. It plans measures to regulate online trading with animals, especially puppies. There is already an application for the certification of dealers in the Federal Council in order to be able to carry out better controls in the future. According to current statistics, 37,000 puppies were offered online in Germany last year, which illustrates the urgency of a need for action. You can find more information here.
The situation of the animals in the animal shelters, like Toby and Elton, is an urgent sign of the need to rethink the existing regulations and to fight illegal animal trade violently. It is to be hoped that the planned measures will be implemented quickly and that affected animals can help them to live better.
