Gerry Adams wins a trial against BBC: 100,000 euros for call damage!

Irland - Gerry Adams, the former leader of Sinn Féin, has won a legal dispute against the BBC. In a judgment of the high court in Ireland it was found that the BBC did not act in a good faith in a report on the alleged approval of the murder of the informant Denis Donaldson through Adam. Adams was awarded a compensation of 100,000 euros ($ 113,000). The case was an assertion from a documentary and an online article by the BBC, which connected Adam to Donaldson's murder, who confessed to the British secret service in 2005.

Denis Donaldson was shot four months after this unveiling in his cottage in Ireland. In the BBC report "Spotlight" there were anonymous statements that accused Adam of commissioning the management of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) to murder Donaldson. Adams denies any participation in the murder and explained that the process was an attempt to hold the BBC responsible. His lawyers were satisfied with the judgment. Adams led Féin's meaning from 1983 to 2018 and always denied that I have ever been a member of the IRA, despite the opposite claims by former colleagues.

background and process course

The process, which has now caused an estimated cost between 3 and 5 million euros, took place in Dublin. Adams hoped that an Irish jury who might have had little or no memories of the troubles would give him an advantage in the procedure. During the process, Adam spent more time on the witness level than the other nine witnesses. His statement stretched over the first seven days, while the corresponding reporter of the Spotlight reportage, Jennifer O’Leary, was only on a witness stand.

During his statement, Adams made it clear that he was not on the dock and vehemently denied that I was involved in IRA or their decision -making processes. This statement was supported by video representations presented by both sides. The BBC showed news reports about IRA attacks, while Adams' lawyers represented him as a peace pent. The case has also rejected the debate about Adams' complex past.

reactions to the judgment

The director of BBC Northern Ireland, Adam Smyth, expressed his disappointment about the judgment and emphasized that the BBC acted in good faith and that the allegations were supported by five other sources. The Spotlight reportage was seen in Ireland by around 16,000 spectators and the accompanying online story only received around 700 page views over 14 months, since its publication in September 2016.

Adams remains a polarizing figure in Irish politics, and this process has further fueled the existing controversy about its role and past. The outcome of the procedure could have far -reaching implications for the relationship between public personalities and the media.
