Pätzold remains a trainer: Bayer 04 women rely on continuity until 2027!

Leverkusen, Deutschland - Roberto Pätzold will remain coach of the Bayer 04 Leverkusen women's team by the end of June 2027. This was announced by those responsible for the association. The early agreement between Pätzold and the association is a continuation of the successful cooperation. Pätzold, in office since summer 2022, has led the team to fourth place in the league after taking office, which underlines success in the race for the Champions League places. Thomas Eichin, the director of Bayer 04, praises the development of the team under Pätzold's leadership and the progress that was made in the club environment.

Pätzold himself expresses himself confidently about the perspective in the club and emphasizes the trust and appreciation that he is shown by the club side. He describes the situation as exciting and challenging. As a graduate sports scientist, however, this is his first stop in women's football. Before his time at Bayer 04, he worked in the Austrian second division for FC Admira Wacker until the end of 2022.

extensive trainer experience

Before Pätzold switched to Bayer 04, he looked after the U-19 juniors of FC Ingolstadt from 2015 to 2021 and was also responsible for the club's second division team at short notice. He began his coaching career in 2009 at the Baden Football Association, where he worked for the U19 and at the DFB base. Pätzold brings a comprehensive experience and a clear vision in the women's football team. Bayer 04, like Achim Feifel, the sporting director of women, emphasize his professionalism and communicative personality.

Pätzold sees the individual development of the players as a central part of his training philosophy. It follows an offensive style of play that is characterized by high variability. These approaches are particularly important in an environment that is becoming more important, while the number of girls and women playing increases in football, as studies show. Nevertheless, the support for women's football remains behind for men's football, which brings challenges for coaches and players.

challenges in women's football

The care of women's football teams is often described as less lucrative and viewed, which could also affect the interest of male trainers. In the current discussion about women's football, the focus is on gender relations and social interactions. Trainers in women's football, such as Pätzold, therefore have to bring not only sporty, but also social skills and empathy to a large extent.

The UEFA Women's European Championship 2017 has already triggered an upward movement in women's football. But even if the challenges are great, Pätzold sees the possibilities and hope of a positive development. The coming years at Bayer 04 Leverkusen could be crucial - both for his personal career as well as for the continued existence and growth of women's football.

For the further developments, it remains to be seen how the team will position itself under Pätzold's leadership at national and international level. The continuation of his work with a clear concept for the individual promotion of the players gives hope for exciting times.
