intensive search measures without success
Despite the mobilization of a police helicopter and other extensive search measures, the efforts have so far been unsuccessful. Similar situations already required large -scale searches, such as in the case of a woman from Bamberg who was missing in March 2025. Here, too, a helicopter and person seekers were used, but this case could not be clarified at first until the woman was finally found. This shows how challenging the search for missing persons can be, even if the police determine intensively.
The Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) defines a missing person as someone who is inexplicably absent and in whom a threat to life or life is accepted. This is especially true for minors who are missing if they leave their living and unknown their stay. In Germany, the local police departments are responsible for the immediate search for people, and in the event of an acute risk, large search operations can be started, supported by various emergency services and organizations.
The situation in context
The number of people missing in Germany is worrying. On 01.01.2025, around 9,420 missing cases were registered in the police (Inpol) information system. There are about 200 to 300 new searches every day, half of which are clarified within a week. It is to be hoped that there will soon be positive news in the case of Sham al Sheikh.
In recent years, questions about the disappearance of young people, especially unaccompanied minor refugees, have increased. In 2024, around 4,300 unaccompanied minor refugees were one of the missing people, the most common cause of their disappearance to leave accommodation. These developments also illustrate the need for effective measures and the cooperation between the police and society.
In view of the current challenges in the search for missing persons, the police urge the population: every hint could be crucial.
