Vacationers are in the mega traffic jam: A10 overloaded during the holiday season!

Golling, Österreich - on June 8, 2025, at 11:10 a.m., reports Michelle Brey on op-online.de The Tauernautobahn (A10) in Austria. The beginning of the Pentecost holidays has led to an increased volume of traffic on the Bavarian and Austrian streets. The day before, a 45 -kilometer traffic jam formed to Bavaria.

The travel time extension for the vacationers concerned was up to five hours according to Ö3. The main cause of the traffic jams are tunnel construction sites at Golling in the Salzburg region. The impaired tunnels are the furnace tunnel, the Hiefler tunnel and the tunnel chain, consisting of Brentenberg, Zetzenberg and Helbersberg. Depending on the directional lane, the tunnel tubes are alternately blocked, which leads traffic in oncoming traffic.

construction sites and traffic disruptions

The completion of the construction site is expected for the end of June 2025. Both the ÖAMTC as well as ASFINAG and ADAC had already pointed out the construction site and possible traffic jams in advance. On the morning of June 8, 2025 at 9:30 a.m., the traffic jam on the A10 was still 24 kilometers long, which resulted in a waiting time of over four hours.

The back travel wave of vacationers is expected from Monday. In addition, there are also further traffic jams in Tyrol, especially in the Innsbruck region, for example on Fernpass-Straße and the burner highway. Due to construction work, the border tunnel on the Italian side of the Brenner Pass was only passable from 10 p.m. to 5:45 a.m., which caused additional delays. The Tyrolean authorities displeased the poor communication from the Italian side in relation to these construction sites.

additional traffic problems

The truck drivers who left the motorway because of the traffic jams contributed to the development of further traffic problems in the surrounding villages. To relieve the traffic flows, the police led truck back to the highway so as not to tighten the situation.

All of these factors illustrate the importance of the Tauern motorway as a central north-south connection for German vacationers to Italy. It connects the federal states of Salzburg and Carinthia and plays a crucial role in trade between Villach/Klagenfurt and Salzburg. The total length of the highway is 194 km, starting at the Salzburg node and ending at the B100 E66 towards Lienz, as described on stemelder-karte.

The Tauern Autobahn, which has played an important role since planning in World War II, often experiences considerable overloads, especially during the summer vacation. Security measures, such as color psychological lighting in tunnels, were introduced to increase the safety of road users and to avoid accidents, as well as the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure in its publication "Transport in Numbers" href = "https://www.bmv.de/shahareddocs/de/artikel/g/verkehr-in-zahl"> bmv.de holds.
