Night campaign in Kiel: 280 tons of transformer successfully transported!

In the night of Wednesday, June 11, 2025, the heavy transport of a 72 -meter -long transformer was successfully carried out in Kiel. The transformer, which shaped the street scene in the Hanseatic city with a weight of 280 tons, started at 10 p.m. from the shipyard in Gaarden and was on its way to the Tennet conversation in Wellsee. The transport had to be reloaded by a ship to a road transporter, which was part of a so -called trimodal transport, as project manager Jens Wiese from Kübler explained. This combined train, ship and street.

For transport, two powerful tractors with 640 hp each were used. With a total of 32 axes, the weight was evenly distributed on the streets. Wiese had planned the route in advance to consider possible challenges such as construction sites, level crossings, bridges and roundabouts. After a ride of about two hours, transportation reached the substation around midnight, which meant a smooth end of this logistical challenge. Particular attention was paid to the transition to Sörenenstraße, where the bridge height was tight, but the maneuver was mastered with a minimal distance.

modernization of the infrastructure

The transported transformer is the first of a total of three new devices to be installed at the location. The second transformer is planned for 2026. These modernization measures are necessary because the existing devices come from the 1960s and the replacement of their replacement ensures improved network connection. According to Wiese, the new transformers are not only operated quietly, but should also contribute to the stability and reliability of the power supply in the region. At the same time, the substation is modernized in order to be up to the challenges of the energy transition.

tennet also plans to build a further substation for a new 380 kV line, in which resistance from residents and the city of Kiel can be expected. It remains to be seen how these plans will develop in the coming years.

other heavy transports in Germany

in Upper Austria, especially in the new substation Wagenham, there was also a significant transport of transformers. On April 10, 2024, a 300 -ton transformer was delivered to increase security of supply in the region. This is part of the Salzburgleitung project, which is intended to support the transport of excess wind power to Western Austria. Another transformer is expected in July 2024. This project underlines the investments in the electricity infrastructure that APG plans to ensure the connection of renewable energies in the coming years. According to APG , investments of around nine billion euros are planned to expand and modernize the existing network.
