New digital path: make Zeiskam's story tangible!
Zeiskam, Deutschland - Today, on June 1, 2025, a significant project will be launched in the small local community of Zeiskam, in the district of Germersheim, which should make the history of the region tangible for the public. Under the significant participation of local historians, students from the University of Koblenz and representatives of the authorities, a new digital path is created, which illuminates the historical importance of the so -called beer cellar. The aim is to make the history of Zeiskam accessible via an Internet platform and thus strengthen the local identity.
Preparations for this innovative project are already in full swing. The application for the model community was successful, which gave the project additional momentum. Already in December there were initial considerations on the part of the community to tackle this project.
The story of Zeiskam
Zeiskam, also known in the Palatinate dialect as a "caesema" or "Zaesim", comprises an area of 8.85 km² and had a population of 2175 inhabitants on December 31, 2023. The municipality belongs to the Bellheim community and is picturesquely located between Germersheim and Landau in the Palatinate. Historically, Zeiskam was first mentioned in 774 in the Lorsch Codex as a zezzincheim, which indicates a long and eventful story.
The community is particularly known for its vegetable growing, especially the onions, and is also associated with a monument to its historically significant objects, such as today's beer cellar. This place could now be reinterpreted as part of the digital project and prepared for a broader public.
What contribution does the digital platform make?
The Internet portal on regional and local history in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland, as is operated by Institute for Historical Studies Rhineland-Palatinate , the goal of making the history of the regions accessible to the public. The integration of digital sources and online publications enables interested parties to deal intensively with local history. This project is also supported by the city of Zeiskam.
The concept that led to the development of the portal was created in the early 2000s and has continuously developed over the years. The approach of including non -professional historical research corresponds to the current zeitgeist of participation and interpretation of local history. The aim is to promote cooperation between citizens interested in history and historical institutions in the region.
With the new digital path in Zeiskam, another step towards visibility and participation of the citizens is now being made in their own history. The beer cellar, already a protected monument, could shine in a new light and gain a broader attractiveness.
The mayor Susanne Lechner, who has been in office since 2019, emphasizes the importance of such initiatives for the village community and sees the project a chance to further expand the cultural identity of Zeiskam. The musicians, artists and everyday designers of the community could be more supported by the new platform in their activities and events.
Overall, the signs in Zeiskam are on progress, and the new digital project could be the beginning of a new era of history in the region.
