Bonn in mind: Police reveals 178 traffic violations in front of schools!

On June 3, the Bonn police took part in the “Safe.Mobil.leben” traffic safety campaign, which aims particularly at the safety of children in road traffic. 33 emergency services were used to carry out controls at primary and secondary schools. The campaign led to a total of 178 rule violations, including 105 speed violations. 93 of these violations were punished with a warning money, while in 12 cases administrative offenses were initiated. It was particularly concerned that some road users used their mobile phone while driving. These included three cyclists and two drivers.

The police also found that three drivers violated the regulation to secure children in the car. Nine parking violations were registered around schools and daycare centers. A dangerous situation occurred when a driver fled before a check at a primary school in Königswinter-Steildorf. The driver, whose vehicle was not insured and was not approved, was later also found in Rhineland-Palatinate, whereupon investigation was initiated. The police made it clear that children are particularly at risk in road traffic. The reasons for this include their limited perception, lower height and often missing risk awareness.

statistics and programs to improve security

The importance of such actions is underpinned by frightening statistics. In 2023, a total of 27,235 children in Germany won in Germany, with 44 of them lost their lives. These tragedies affected 13 children as a passenger in cars, 22 as pedestrians and 4 as cyclists. The Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport (BMDV) supports various programs to improve traffic safety for children, such as the new campaign with Pumuckl, which discusses basic traffic rules in ten videos. Another project, the "child and traffic" program, affects training for parents in day care centers.

The statistical data also show that in the event of accidents with children under the age of 15 in 2022, about 25,800 children were violated, which is an increase of 16 % compared to the previous year. Children particularly often have an accident on the way to school, especially between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. on weekdays, where 14 % of accidents occur. The need for preventive measures is clear; 36 % of the crashed children ran by bike, while 34 % were sitting in a car and 22 % were on foot.

important traffic protection measures

In addition, there are numerous initiatives to promote traffic safety, such as the "Captain Period" program for primary school children and kindergarten children, which is distributed free of charge at schools and daycare centers. Measures to ensure child protection in the car are also of central importance; Children up to 12 years or less than 150 cm must be secured in corresponding child seats. It was found that 99.5 % of the children are secured, but only 35 % of them are correctly secured.

The Bonn police and the BMDV make it clear with their programs and actions how crucial it is to improve the safety of children on road traffic. This topic remains of great relevance, not only in Bonn, but all of Germany. Increased mindfulness and adapted driving behavior can help to significantly reduce the risk of accidents for the youngest road users.
