New signal box brings S-Bahn chaos: Münchner have to reschedule!

Deutsche Bahn (DB) will put a new electronic signal box at the Munich Ostbahnhof from June 7th to 18th, 2025. This measure falls into the time of Pentecost holidays and brings considerable restrictions on S-Bahn traffic in Munich. The aim of the construction measures is the digitization and modernization of leading and security technology, which is part of the extensive renovation program "S3" of the DB, which should last until 2027. In particular, the passengers of the S-Bahn have to adjust to significant changes.

From June 7th, the main line and adjacent S-Bahn tracks around the Ostbahnhof will be completely closed. This means that there will be no S-Bahn between Pasing and Riem as well as the Giesing, Trudering and Johanneskirchen stops. To ensure the mobility of passengers, replacement traffic by bus is set up every 10 minutes between Pasing and Ostbahnhof.

restrictions and alternatives

The sections between Ostbahnhof and Isartor as well as Giesing, Trudering and Johanneskirchen are particularly affected. During the construction phase from June 7th to 13th, 2025, S-Bahn traffic in these areas is massively reduced. Only the lines S2 and S3 continue to run between Laim and Isartor. All other lines end prematurely, for example in Pasing or at the main train station. Amplifier trains and the usual ten-minute cycle are eliminated, which can lead to a high level of utilization of the remaining S-Bahn lines, especially on June 8th at the final of the UEFA Nations League.

passengers are therefore encouraged to avoid subways, regional trains or alternative S-Bahn connections. For arrival to the airport it is recommended to use the S1 every 20 minutes. The Munich S-Bahn has developed a strongly adapted line network to intercept the restrictions. These measures are also reflected in a detailed timetable that is provided on the DB and S-Bahn Munich websites.

construction progress and future measures

In the third construction phase, which lasts from June 13th to 18th, the operation of the new signal box is observed in real operation. Even during this time, S-Bahn traffic in the affected area remains significantly reduced. The lines S1 and S5 will not drive through the main route, which makes accessibility in the city center even more difficult.

The DB informs about all changes in the timetable in good time, and the changed timetables are available online. Further construction work is planned in 2024, with restrictions on weekends until the end of 2024, including during Easter and for ordnance probes at the Ostbahnhof. Passengers should always remain well informed to avoid possible inconvenience.
