S-Bahn chaos in Leipzig: Line S10 will be completely discontinued in 2025!

Leipzig, Deutschland - The S10 in Leipzig is expected to be fully stopped in mid -December 2025. This was confirmed by the special -purpose association for the local transport area in Leipzig (ZVNL). The S10 runs between Miltitzer Allee and the main train station and has recently been affected by failures. In the period from January to March 2025, only 50.3 % of the planned trips drove the route according to schedule. Around 49.7 % of the trips, a total of 1629, failed.

The decision to set the S10 is not directly related to these failures. Rather, the reason is in financial problems: the funds for ordering the traffic services are missing to the extent.

Future of the S-Bahn lines

Despite the setting of the S10, the S1 will continue to run between Miltitzer Allee and Stötteritz. From December 2026, improvements in the capacity of the trains on line S1 are also planned. The number of seats is to be increased from 150 to 200 and that of the standing room from 150 to 340.

The DB Regio that operates the S10 is currently faced with numerous challenges. These include personnel failures, vehicle damage and building -related disorders. In particular, the lack of drivers were identified as the main problem. In order to counteract this, the DB Regio launched a “attitude and qualification offensive” to increase the number of employees.

Problematic traffic

The situation has led to the ZVNL imposed sanctions against the DB Regio due to "minor and bad performance". The DB Regio is currently working intensively to provide the contractually agreed offer. Nevertheless, the situation remains tense, and further information on timetable deviations can be called up on the website from the MDV: https://www.mdv.de/bahnplanwarderungen/ .

The changes and the setting of the S10 affect the mobility of many commuters. In the coming time, it will be important for passengers to find out more about alternative transport options and adjustments in the timetable. More details can also be found in the Deutsche Bahn fact sheet: https://www1.deutschebahn.com/resource/blob/12569180/FEC73F324609AAEB1F25605A39F/FAKTENBLATT_10_J_CTL_UND-MDSB-Data.PDF .

In the future, it will be crucial how the transport companies react to the current challenges and which measures are taken to ensure reliable local transport connections for the region.
