S-Bahn S6 between Essen and Düsseldorf: Massive construction work from June!
Ratingen-Hösel, Deutschland - The S6 S6 between Essen and Düsseldorf will no longer drive for several months. The failure, which was announced by those responsible for the Deutsche Bahn (DB), begins on June 30, 2025 and is expected to continue until November 30, 2025. The reason for this extensive blocking is a slope slide, which was caused in January 2024 by extreme weather events in Ratingen-Hösel. Around 400 meters of track and railway embankment were destroyed, which required a complete stop of the traffic.
The renovation work, which begins after the planning and approval phase by the Federal Railway Authority, include the construction of a new support wall made of bored piles at about 50 meters, which is anchored up to ten meters deep in the ground. Further measures for slope protection include soil anchoring and collecting nets on around 10,000 square meters. This is necessary to better secure the route for future weather extremes. The railway spokesman Dirk Pohlmann expressed optimism that the construction work can be carried out in the intended time frame.
extensive construction work
During the blocking, other work on the route between Düsseldorf-Rath and Essen-Kettwig is also carried out. Almost 15 kilometers of tracks are renewed, which includes the exchange of 24,600 thresholds and 30,000 tons of gravel. The total cost of the construction work is estimated at 20 million euros. These construction measures are part of a comprehensive renovation program of the DB, which extends over several years and comprises investments of a total of 53 billion euros. These missions aim to improve the infrastructure by the end of 2027 and to ensure smooth operation.
For the time of the block, a rail replacement traffic is set up by bus, which will operate all train stations between Düsseldorf-Unterrath and Essen Central Station. The trains in Düsseldorf Airport Terminal end for travelers from Cologne. This means that passengers will take longer for their trips, which is particularly important for leisure traffic. The S6 is of great importance for visitors to the Essen Baldeneyse, especially with regard to events such as the World University Games in July 2023, for which the route will not be available again in good time.
Future view
according to WDR the S6 is expected to drive regularly six months earlier than planned, on December 14, 2025. The traffic connection and infrastructure of Deutsche Bahn are still the focus of the “S3” group renovation program. This program not only provides for the removal of bottlenecks in the rail network, but also the modernization of train stations, which are to be designed by 2027 more customer -friendly and sustainable. In summary, the blocking of the S6 is not only a challenge for travelers, but also an important step towards a safer and powerful rail infrastructure in North Rhine-Westphalia. The funds and resources invested should offer long -term solutions and withstand future weather extremes better.
