Saxony-Anhalt is planning a national cyber exercise center for municipalities!

In a current advance, Bernd Schlömer, State Secretary in the Digital Ministry of Saxony-Anhalt, presented plans for a National Center for Cyber Security in the municipal area. This center should enable municipalities from all over Germany to specifically practice dealing with cyber attacks. An urgent need, because so far the town halls and offices have lacked specific exercise opportunities, while companies in the critical infrastructure have already had established scenarios. Schlömer explains that it is time to give the municipalities the chance to prepare for cyber incidents.

The planned cyber practice center would offer employees from various municipalities the opportunity to train the emergency and test new software. A concept is currently being worked on that is expected to need one to three years for the implementation. The cost of the center is estimated to be a seven -digit amount, although it is still unclear who will take over the financing and who acts as the sponsor of the center. Schlömer emphasizes that the risk of severe damage to cyber attacks can be reduced by up to two thirds through targeted further training. This underlines the urgency of a professional approach to cyber security in municipal administration.

support for municipalities

The sign contains comprehensive information on coping with cyber attacks on municipal information systems and to restore the IT infrastructure. Central to this is the necessity of trained employees and predicted internal and external structures. This also includes support from other authorities or private service providers. A fictional scenario of a ransomware attack serves as a thread to illustrate the processes and emergency plans. The handout is intended to help municipalities to deal with cyber dangers, and will also be published in print form in the coming weeks on the BBK website.

The development of the National Cyber Exercise Center and the publication of the guide illustrate the increasing importance of IT security in public administration. Now it is time for municipalities to deal with these strategies in order to significantly improve their digital ability to act and to effectively counter the challenges of cybercrime.
