A2 after mishap: truck loses synthetic resin - closure and speed limit!
On Wednesday evening there was a remarkable incident on the A2 in the Börde district with a truck that lost part of its load. The truck was transporting liquid silicate resin and as a result around 1,000 liters of the substance spilled onto the road over a distance of around 15 kilometers. The driver noticed at 7:34 p.m. that two of his IBC containers were badly damaged, causing fluid to leak. This incident temporarily led to a complete closure of the motorway between Eilsleben and Irxleben. According to tagesschau.de, the route was cleaned several times, using highly mechanized cleaning processes from external companies.
The highway was initially completely closed so that the cleanup work could be carried out safely. The police confirmed that the resin was classified as non-toxic, meaning there was no acute danger to other road users. However, the cleaning work, which was completed on Friday, still led to significant traffic delays and long traffic jams, especially from the Eilsleben junction, where traffic was rerouted. Tag24 reports that a speed limit of 80 km/h applies in the affected area during the cleaning, as the police continue to carry out checks.
Serious injuries and investigation
Another aspect of the incident highlights the dangers associated with the transport of dangerous goods. Shortly before the synthetic resin was phased out, a dangerous goods transporter carrying formic acid had an accident. The driver of this vehicle was seriously injured, which further complicated the situation. Police warned of the risk of explosions throughout the incident. The exact cause of the leak during resin transport is still unclear. Investigations into this are ongoing.
The traffic situation has now eased and the motorway is fully passable again. The left and middle lanes were opened on Thursday, while the right lane was reopened to traffic on Friday afternoon. Tagesschau notes that the cleanliness on the route is now also being scrutinized in order to prevent future incidents of this kind. However, despite the severity of the incidents, car culture in the region appears to remain robust.
