Dead spots in Saxony-Anhalt: Mobile network is still patchy!
In Germany, mobile phone coverage is a concern. In Saxony-Anhalt in particular, there are apparently some regional dead spots that persist. So reported Day24 that there are major supply gaps in the Harz as well as in the districts of Stendal and Wittenberg. It is hard to believe that, at a time when 4G and 5G are on the rise almost everywhere, there is no decent network available in some places in Saxony-Anhalt.
According to the Federal Network Agency, around 98 percent of the measuring points in Germany are covered by modern 4G and 5G network technologies. However, dead spots occur in less than one percent of these measurement points. However, there are some regions, such as Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate, where these problems are particularly pronounced.
The latest measurement data
The mobile phone measurement week, which took place from May 26th to June 1st, helped the Federal Network Agency collect data that is now used to check network coverage. Over bundesnetzagentur.de Users can view the current mobile phone coverage in Germany and search for their surroundings on an interactive map. It shows that 2.4 percent of the measuring points in the Harz had no reception and, in addition, at 3.4 percent only the outdated 2G technology was available.
The many dead spots in Saxony-Anhalt are particularly annoying because they not only affect internet connections, but also telephone calls. These deficiencies have led the Federal Network Agency to require providers to improve their network coverage. In fact, the agency's goal is to provide almost universal coverage of the mobile phone network - even in rural areas.
The voices of those affected
An illustrated example is the town of Seifriedsburg in the Main-Spessart district, where there has been no proper network since the introduction of mobile communications. Customers experience first hand how frustrating a lack of mobile connection can be. Nationwide, the measurements received a lot of attention from over 150,000 participants, with many users coming from North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria.
It will be interesting to see how the situation develops in the coming months. According to the Federal Network Agency, the mobile phone measurement week should be repeated annually and dead spots should also be measured regularly. Because one thing is clear: a functioning mobile phone network is essential for all areas of life these days and it remains to be hoped that all regions will receive equal service in a timely manner.
