Water shortage threatens: Strict bans on irrigation in Saxony-Anhalt!

The summer heat has Saxony-Anhalt firmly under control this year. The Mansfeld-Südharz district in particular is forced to take drastic measures to combat water shortages. Since June 27, 2025, there has been a ban on taking water from lakes and rivers. In addition, watering public and private green spaces and sports facilities is no longer permitted between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Users with a permit under water law, such as agricultural operations, are exempt from this ban. This regulation will remain in place until September 30th, but can be adjusted at any time depending on precipitation developments, as MDR reports.

But the drought is not only affecting the Mansfeld-Südharz district. Water withdrawal bans are also planned in the Stendal district from July 1, 2025. Streams and rivers are no longer allowed to be tapped here, and the extraction of groundwater to irrigate gardens is also strictly regulated. Daytime watering will be prohibited there in the future, although there are exceptions for selective watering with special suction trucks. The Altmarkkreis Salzwedel is also planning a general decree to restrict water withdrawals, which is expected to come into force at the same time (Radio Brocken).

The situation in other districts

The water shortage affects many regions of Saxony-Anhalt. In the Harz district, for example, the population is asked to use water on their own responsibility. A ban could be imposed if the level is permanently below low water flow. Restrictions are also expected for the Saale district from the second week of July. A general decree is being prepared here that regulates the withdrawal of water from wells and bodies of water.

The water levels are alarming in many places. In Anhalt-Bitterfeld, for example, a general decree to restrict water withdrawals is already being introduced. The districts of Wittenberg, Salzlandkreis and Burgenlandkreis are also under constant observation and are relying on voluntary restrictions. People's voice has documented the situation comprehensively and makes it clear that the anxious eyes are on the sky.

The temperatures are currently reaching values ​​of over 35 degrees, which is further exacerbating the situation. In many areas without explicit bans, it is recommended that gardens only be watered in the morning or evening. Citizens are required to use water sparingly so as not to put unnecessary strain on resources.

In these hot days, we can only hope that the longed-for rain will come soon and that the water shortage will be brought under control.
