Arsonist caught in Saxony-Anhalt: photographers in police sights!
In a shocking incident in Saxony-Anhalt, authorities have arrested two men suspected of being involved in a series of arson attacks. The alarm was triggered on September 24, 2025 in the event of a fire in an empty train station building in Raguhn-Jeßnitz when the fire broke out at around 7:45 p.m. and quickly spread to the entire building. The resulting property damage amounts to a five-figure amount, while no people were injured. But the incident also had far-reaching effects on traffic: the nearby railway line had to be closed for several hours, which had consequences for local, long-distance and freight traffic, such as MDR reported.
The police quickly identified the suspects, a 23-year-old man from Bitterfeld-Wolfen and a 33-year-old from Zörbig, near the crime scene. Shortly after the arrests, investigators visited the two men's apartments and secured various pieces of evidence, including cell phones and storage media. On September 25, 2025, due to strong suspicion, arrest warrants were issued against the two men, who have been in custody ever since.
Versatile arson series
The police and public prosecutor's office suspect that the suspects are not only responsible for the most recent fire, but could also be connected to a total of twelve other arsons. The known incidents include fires such as the forest fire between Retzau and Möhlau on July 30, 2025, the fire in Diebziger Busch on August 27, 2025 and a fire in a former shopping market in Wolfen on August 3, 2025, which caused material damage of around 1,000 euros. All this information comes from a detailed analysis of the incidents conducted by the criminal investigation service of the Anhalt-Bitterfeld police station Saxony-Anhalt Press.
In addition to suspecting a series of targeted fires, investigators also have indications that the men may have wanted to sell fire photos to the media. This sheds worrying light on the motives behind the crimes. Nevertheless, the presumption of innocence applies until a final verdict is reached.
Arson in Germany in focus
The arrests are part of a broader problem: arson remains a serious issue in Germany. According to current data from the Federal Criminal Police Office, which was collected over a period from 2013 to 2024, the number of known arson cases is alarmingly high. This applies to both intentional arson and cases that create a fire hazard, such as Statista shows. In recent years there have been increasing reports of such crimes, drawing our attention not only to the dangers, but also to the necessary measures to prevent them.
At a time when society is battling arson, the development of these investigations remains in the public eye. It is essential to investigate these cases in order to bring those responsible to justice and prevent future crimes.
