On September 7, 2025, numerous people gathered in the Wittenberg Castle Church to commemorate Wolfgang Böhmer, the former Prime Minister of Saxony-Anhalt, who died at the end of June 2025 at the age of 89. The memorial service attracted not only his family, but also citizens and prominent representatives from politics, business and church. Those present included, among others, the incumbent Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff (CDU) and Wittenberg's Mayor Torsten Zugehör, who praised Böhmer as a defining figure in the region.
Superintendent Gabriele Metzner emphasized Böhmer's extraordinary commitment to the city and emphasized that he was an honorary citizen of Wittenberg. She also acknowledged his role in founding the Luther Circle of Friends. In a prayer, liturgist Birgit Neumann-Becker honored Böhmer for his talents as a doctor and politician, while Pastor Werner Weinhold highlighted the biographical stages of the deceased. From his training in medicine to his work as chief physician at the Paul-Gerhardt-Stift in Wittenberg – Böhmer left a remarkable mark on the city.
A life for people
Wolfgang Böhmer was born on January 27, 1936 in Dürrhennersdorf. His career began with studying medicine at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig, where he received his doctorate in 1959.
