Zeitz is blossoming: 15 million for sustainable change at the Zekiwa location!

Exciting things are happening in Saxony-Anhalt: a former site of the Zekiwa stroller factory in Zeitz is becoming a center for sustainable construction. The star reports that the revitalization of the area is being supported with substantial funding of around 15.5 million euros from the state initiative “Saxony-Anhalt – Together for a New European Bauhaus (NEB)”. On top of that, another 8.8 million euros are available for project partners in the area.

The city of Zeitz, the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation and other top-class institutions such as the Burg Giebichenstein Art Academy in Halle and the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg are on board. Together they form a multidisciplinary consortium that aims to transform the site into a real-world laboratory for innovative, circular and climate-neutral construction. The focus is not only on technical know-how, but also on aesthetics and creative design options Bauhaus Dessau is particularly important to the heart.

A real laboratory for the future

The “Reallabor Zekiwa Zeitz” is not just a one-off project; it should be realized by the end of 2027. It takes up the idea of seeing construction as a process for society as a whole that is in harmony with ecological aspects. The revitalization of the historical industrial monument is linked to the principles of the New European Bauhaus, which follows the motto “beautiful – sustainable – together”. This means that aesthetics, sustainability and a sense of community play a central role.

In the context of the EU program for green transformation, funding from the Just Transition Fund (JTF) is of great importance. This is intended to mitigate the negative effects of the coal phase-out and promote social justice. More precisely, a total of 44 million euros are available for the NEB initiative, which are available in selected regions such as Anhalt-Bitterfeld and the Saalekreis. This makes it easy to see how closely the topics of climate and social interaction are connected.

Shaping the future together

The EU is also calling for ideas to improve the future way of life in these regions. The New European Bauhaus is a guiding principle here. The initiative promotes solutions that are sustainable, inclusive and aesthetically pleasing - especially in small communities. With a focus on neighborhoods and the wishes of citizens, a way is sought to respect the diversity of European traditions and at the same time provide new impulses.

The former Zekiwa location in Zeitz will be nothing less than a showcase project for the entire region, showing how we can master the challenges of the future together. In a world where rethinking is required, Zeitz sets a good example and makes it unmistakably clear: It's about creating values that go beyond material things and enable a life in harmony with nature.
