Wave of burglaries in the Börde: Perpetrators on the move, witnesses wanted!

A worrying break-in in Hohendodeleben is causing excitement in the region. At 1:10 a.m. an unknown person tried to break into a single-family home on Rudolf-Breitscheid-Weg. Luckily, the 52-year-old victim woke up to suspicious noises and confronted the perpetrator. He then fled without loot in an unknown direction. The police also discovered a damaged patio door on the neighboring property, where it was also broken into during a vacation, as Magdeburg klickt reports. The extent of the damage remains unclear, but the Haldensleben police are calling on witnesses to help (Tel.: 03904/478-0).

Another break-in occurred on July 9th in a swimming pool in Wanzleben. Unknown perpetrators forced open the door of the kiosk and escaped with food worth around 500 euros. Here, too, there is no evidence of the perpetrators so far, so the Haldensleben police are also looking for witnesses.

Growing burglary numbers

Given the recent developments in Hohendodeleben, this incident is part of a worrying trend. As can be read on Home Insider, there were a total of 77,819 home break-ins in Germany in 2023, which corresponds to an increase of around 18 percent compared to the previous year. North Rhine-Westphalia in particular has recorded a 15 percent increase in residential burglaries. This region is known for higher burglary rates, while Bavaria has the lowest rates.

However, around 47 percent of burglary attempts are unsuccessful, which shows that many perpetrators rely on easy opportunities. Typical burglary methods include prying open doors or windows, with patio and balcony doors in particular often serving as a target. In view of these figures, preventative measures are becoming increasingly important. The police offer free security advice to raise awareness among citizens and permanently reduce the number of burglaries.

Traffic accidents cause alarm

Road safety in the region has also come into focus due to numerous incidents in recent days. On July 10th there was a serious accident in Gröningen between a 34-year-old car driver and a 15-year-old moped driver. The moped driver suffered serious injuries and had to be taken to hospital in a rescue helicopter. The driver also had to be under medical care.

A little later there was another serious accident near Hötensleben, where a 74-year-old car driver was involved in a collision with a truck that had the right of way. Both drivers suffered serious injuries and had to be taken to hospital. The police have launched an investigation and are examining the circumstances of the collision.

The current situation in the region poses challenges for both residents and the police. While there are calls for an increase in preventative measures in the event of break-ins and traffic accidents, it remains to be seen what the security situation will look like in the coming weeks. Citizens can always pass on their observations and tips to the relevant authorities in order to make their own neighborhood safer.
