Börde district issues ban on water withdrawal – drought alarms!

A strict water withdrawal ban is now in effect in the Börde district and will apply until September 30, 2025 or until revoked. This measure was decided due to the persistently low water levels in surface waters, which are exacerbated by prolonged drought. As the People's voice reported, despite years of heavy rainfall in 2023 and 2024, the water situation could not improve, which made the situation even more tense.

The ban covers all extractions from rivers, streams and ponds using technical means, for both private and commercial purposes. Particularly affected are options for using water to irrigate green spaces, sports facilities and agricultural operations. Specifically, no water can be taken from wells between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m., which also severely restricts irrigation. During this period, a large part of the irrigated water evaporates, which is classified as inefficient.

Environmental protection and water supply in focus

The water authorities try to protect the waters through such measures, because prolonged drought not only leads to falling water levels, but also endangers the flora and fauna. A fall in water levels can lead to algae growth, fish deaths and the loss of microorganisms. “Groundwater is incredibly important not only for nature, but also for the drinking water supply,” emphasizes Water habitat Initiative. In order to enforce the regulation, the Börde district will carry out regular checks on water bodies. If the ban is ignored, fines of up to 50,000 euros can be imposed.

The current regulations are not unique to the Börde district. In many regions of Germany, such as Brandenburg, Saxony and Lower Saxony, similar water abstraction bans have been issued in order to protect the natural environment. In Brandenburg, for example, as rbb24 reports, strict restrictions were already in place in several districts, with such measures being due to the continuous lowering of groundwater levels.

The residents of the Börde district are encouraged to use water sustainably and economically. A “good hand” in water management is now more important than ever in order to conserve natural resources and leave an intact environment for future generations. Those responsible appeal to everyone to be conscious about their water consumption and to actively contribute to environmental protection.
