Börde district breaks record: over 394,000 kilometers in CITY CYCLING!

The Börde district can proudly look back on its results at CITY CYCLING 2025. This extremely popular campaign took place for the third time and enjoyed lively participation. A total of 1,942 cyclists covered an impressive distance of 394,911 kilometers together, which is a clear record. For comparison: Last year there were 1,394 participants and a total distance of 284,050 kilometers. This is a sharp increase and shows that cycling traffic is making ever greater waves in this country. The initiative saved around 65 tons of CO₂ emissions, a truly remarkable result!

As the Landkreis Börde reports, the district is in third place among the municipalities in Saxony-Anhalt with 100,000 to 499,999 inhabitants. Magdeburg is at the top, followed by Halle (Saale). This year, 43 municipalities in Saxony-Anhalt took part in the competition, which represents an increase of 12 municipalities compared to the previous year. This development shows how seriously cycling is now taken in the region.

Support for the cycling initiative

The campaign is not only organized by the Climate Alliance, but also receives support from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Digital Affairs of the State of Saxony-Anhalt and the Working Group of Bicycle-Friendly Communities in Saxony-Anhalt e.V. In this context, CITY CYCLING is often combined with other cycling days where prizes are raffled off among the best participants, such as Mid Saxony-Anhalt reports.

This year's campaign took place from May 1st to September 30th, with each municipality individually determining when their competition began. In Saxony-Anhalt, over 15,000 people cycled and together covered more than 2.7 million kilometers. Nationwide, more than 217 million kilometers were cycled, saving a total of 36,152 tons of CO₂.

Long-term promotion of cycling

But CITY CYCLING is more than just a competition; it also promotes the visibility of cycling and supports the planning of cycle path expansion. Innovative approaches are supported by financial resources from the federal and state governments. As BMV reports, the financial framework for promoting cycling has been improved and secured in the long term. Programs such as the “Cycling Model Project” and “Radnetz Deutschland” are scheduled to run until 2029, which promises long-term investments in the cycling infrastructure.

These developments show that cycling plays a central role on the path to greater climate protection not only in the Börde district, but also throughout Germany. The response to CITY CYCLING in Saxony-Anhalt is a positive sign for the future of cycling and a healthy lifestyle.
