In the heart of Saxony-Anhalt, the joy of new swimming opportunities is being celebrated: As of December 31st, a total of 315 hectares of land in the region were officially designated for swimming. This good news brings a breath of fresh air to the leisure scene and offers residents the opportunity to use the surrounding waters even more intensively. According to Kompakt.media, the Harz and Burgenlandkreis districts recorded the largest areas at 34 and 35 hectares.
The newly designated areas not only benefit swimmers, but also contribute to general land use in Saxony-Anhalt. In total, the state government has classified 45,767 hectares as bodies of water, which opens up a considerable variety of possible uses. Of this total area, 24,874 hectares are made up of flowing water, while 20,708 hectares are spread over standing water. This also includes 186 hectares of harbor basins, which are an example of the use of the water areas.
Ecological measures in sight
But it's not just the designation of new bathing areas that is noteworthy. Water development concepts (GEK) are also being drawn up in Saxony-Anhalt in order to implement the European Water Framework Directive. As explained on the website of the State Office for Flood Protection and Water Management LHW, these concepts aim to improve the ecological status of water bodies and promote the sustainable use of water resources.
The GEK provides municipalities and interested parties with area-related fundamentals on which further important decisions can be based. These concepts are developed taking into account the needs and suggestions of the affected users and land owners. The measures are designed so that they are flood-neutral or even improve flood protection.

The results of the water development concepts are then incorporated into the creation of management plans and programs of measures for the important Elbe and Weser river basins, such as the [LVWA Saxony-Anhalt]. A large number of projects are coordinated in order to implement these goals through active project management - because only together can the good ecological potential of the water bodies in the region be achieved.
