Fatal playground accident in Bergwinkel: driver dies on site

A tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, July 3, 2025, in Bergwinkel, a municipality on the Finne in the Burgenland district. At around 4:20 p.m., a 72-year-old driver left the road and raced into an adjacent children's playground. His vehicle stopped at a play tower, resulting in a dramatic and tragic scenario. The driver, who was initially unconscious during the accident, unfortunately could not be rescued and died on site. The passenger, a 53-year-old, suffered shock and was immediately taken to hospital. Fortunately, there were no injuries among the few playground visitors who were there at the time. The exact cause of the accident could have been a medical problem of the driver, and the investigation is still ongoing, as MZ reports.

The accident site was closed for over three hours while police and rescue teams dealt with the incident. The playground will remain closed until further notice for public safety and further investigation.

Common causes of accidents and safety aspects

Accidents on playgrounds are not isolated cases; they are among the more common risks for children up to 17 years old. According to statistics from Kindersicherheit, accidental injuries are one of the greatest health risks for children and young people in Germany. Accidents in play and leisure environments account for 17.4% of all accidents, while most accidents (43.8%) occur in one's own home or in a private environment.

  • Beispiel für Unfallorte:
  • Zuhause bzw. im privaten Umfeld: 43,8%
  • In Schulen oder Betreuungseinrichtungen: 24,2%
  • Auf Spielplätzen oder in Sporteinrichtungen: 17,4%

In 2021, around 11.5 million children under the age of 15 were registered in Germany, and around 1.9 million sought medical advice due to accidents. What is particularly worrying is that one in eight injured children had to spend at least one night in hospital. Men are overrepresented among those affected - 18.6% of boys suffered accidents compared to 14.3% of girls. These figures highlight the need to take preventive measures to ensure children's safety.

In this tense situation, it is to be hoped that those affected can recover from the tragic experience and that increased safety precautions will be taken at playgrounds in the future to prevent similar incidents. Further information about local blue light operations can be found at MeinBezirk.
