Building culture in view: Dessau-Roßlau is preparing for the Buga 2035!

On July 8, 2025, there was a lot going on in Dessau-Roßlau. As part of its summer trip, the Federal Foundation for Building Culture stopped in the city and invited to chat about architecture and urban development. In cooperation with the Saxony-Anhalt Chamber of Architects, there were discussions about exemplary projects and innovative ideas for promoting building culture-all of this in front of the impressive Bauhaus Museum. Mayor Dr. Robert Reck warmly welcomed the participants and received the latest building culture report by Reiner Nagel, the chairman of the Baukultur Federal Foundation. The report addresses, among other things, the political dimension of architecture and the social framework.

The event not only served the exchange, but also as an impetus for concrete developments in Dessau-Roßlau. Nagel referred to the upcoming Federal Garden Show 2035, which is intended to serve as an important impulse provider for a transformation process in the city. Barbara Steiner, director of the Bauhaus Foundation, spoke about the opportunities for the further development of the architecture in the context of the upcoming Bauhaus anniversary and called on to actively participate in the urban landscape.

urban development and greening

According to the introductory words, a joint tour followed, which led through the pleasure garden and the mill island to the "egg cutter" as an access to the front zoo. Here Dr. Kirsten Lott presented the urban joint concept, which aims to better network existing green areas. In particular, the example of "Scheibe Nord" shows how microdes can be successfully greened in order to take into account a climate -adapted urban development. The discussion also highlighted the challenges of urban greenery, including usage conflicts and structural obstacles.

The initiative for the Federal Garden Show 2035 is under high pressure. Experts such as urban planners, landscape architects and architects have created a position paper that shows the advantages of a Buga for Dessau-Roßlau and the surrounding area. According to this paper, the Federal Garden Show could not only upgrade the region, but also serve as a national shop window. The reasoning is based on the proof of the positive effects of past federal garden shows, for example in cities such as Magdeburg and Havelberg, where sustainable urban development processes were initiated. If it is based on the experts, Buga could bring fresh ideas and visions to the region to sustainably redesign and revitalize the city within a decade.

tackle together

How important a community will is to be a community will become clear when you look at the example of the city of Bingen. There, an early decision to reorganize rail and industrial areas led to a sustainable structural change, which promoted the exchange of goods to trade and tourism. This also increases the demands on a city that wants to organize a major event like a state garden show. Nicole Morsblech, Vice President of the SGD Nord, emphasizes that in addition to the will, also in professional competence and broad support for politics, business and the population.

summarized can be said that Dessau-Roßlau is on a promising path to the Federal Garden Show 2035. The exchange and the initiatives that are now being launched could be pioneering for the sustainable development of the city and its surroundings. A strong sign that people want to actively participate in the design of their rooms. The challenges are great, but with good hands, fresh ideas and comprehensive projects could shape the cityscape.
