Federal Garden Show 2035: Dessau-Roßlau starts with a big contract!

Dessau-Roßlau is taking big steps towards the Federal Garden Show 2035. On September 26, 2025, the city and the German Federal Garden Show Society (DBG) signed the implementation contract, which represents a crucial milestone for this ambitious project. Mayor Robert Reck and DBG managing director Achim Schloemer signed something that will shape the future of the city. More than 10,000 citizens had previously voted for BUGA in a decision - a clear sign that the residents are behind this project.

Dessau-Roßlau, known for its four castles and the gardens of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Dessau-Wörlitzer Gartenreich”, as well as the Bauhaus, will not only set a cultural accent with this garden show. The Federal Horticultural Show is also intended to provide a platform for regional development, tourism and quality of life, supported by the state government in Magdeburg. State Secretary Gert Zender was proud to be present at the signing of the contract and to emphasize the opportunities that the project holds for the region.

A city mosaic in the heart of the city

The focus of BUGA will be Dessau's city center, where over 20 core areas will form a “city mosaic”. The city council had already laid the groundwork for this mega project last year, which is intended to create space for both nature and urban development. Membership in a UNESCO biosphere reserve such as the “Elbe River Landscape” will also play a central role, as the natural experiences will have a significant influence on the design of the BUGA.

The founding of the Federal Horticultural Show Society Dessau-Roßlau is already on the agenda, followed by the sharpening of the area's backdrop. This structured approach is intended to ensure that the garden show is not just a temporary event, but rather contributes to improving the cityscape in the long term.

A positive togetherness

The announcements by Mayor Reck and DBG Managing Director Schloemer indicate a positive premonition for the project. They see the BUGA as an opportunity to put Dessau-Roßlau on the fast track when it comes to environmental awareness and quality of life. With a clear focus on sustainability and an environmentally friendly garden show, the event will also act as a model for future exhibitions.

Citizens' interest remains unbroken. On September 23rd, an information event took place in St. Mary's Church, which attracted many interested people. Here questions could be asked and more information about the Federal Garden Show could be obtained.

The Federal Horticultural Show (BUGA) is not just a one-off event in individual cities, but an important part of German horticulture, which takes place every two years in different cities. The BUGA 2035 will therefore be a further step towards a greener future for Dessau-Roßlau and a firm commitment to the beauty of nature and urban quality of life. Who knows, perhaps we will also see new records in visitor numbers that have already been achieved at this major event in the past, such as the BUGA 1983 in Munich with over 11 million visitors.

Overall, everything indicates that Dessau-Roßlau and the expected projects from the Federal Garden Show will bring exciting developments that will have an impact well beyond the year 2035.
