CSD in Wittenberg: Despite the right threat to diversity on the street!

CSD in Wittenberg: Despite the right threat to diversity on the street!

The Lutherstadt Wittenberg is facing a significant event: On Saturday, the Christopher Street Day (CSD) will be celebrated for the first time. It starts from 1 p.m. and the motto is "make variety visible". The organizers expect around 200 participants, but the joy of this festive occasion is clouded by the current situation.

The police classified the situation as potentially dangerous. The reason for the increased safety precautions are the registration of a counter -rally with around 50 participants, which are assigned to the right -wing scene. The police authorities rely on support from other departments and hope for a peaceful course of the event, similar to the CSD in Dessau, which took place without major incidents. "We would like to create a safe environment for everyone," says a spokesman for the operations management, such as MDR reported.

growing fears in the queer community

The alarm bells ring out loud, and the organizers warn of increasing fear in the queer community. Falko Jentsch, board member of the CSD Saxony-Anhalt, expresses concern about growing right-wing aggressiveness in the region. He emphasizes that the country has created good conditions for the protection of such events, but at the same time emphasizes that the concerns of the participants are not unfounded. "The mood in the community is tense," reports Süddeutsche.de .

A particularly alarming example is the violent attack on a rally against hate in Bad Freienwalde, which only took place last Sunday. Members of the Queeren Community were also present there. These events contribute to general uncertainty - parents inquire about security, and many young people do not dare to take part in such events because they have to fear for their security.

right attacks as a known problem

In Saxony-Anhalt,

right attacks on CSDs are an issue that always makes headlines. According to incidents in cities such as Weißenfels, Halle/Saale and Wernigerode, the situation is also discussed by Tagesschau.de . "Queeres life in East Germany is increasingly threatened by right -wing threats," quotes the news site experts. The AfD had developed into the strongest political force in many regions of East Germany, which increases the concerns in the community.

The CSDs in Saxony-Anhalt are now under special protection. At the end of 2023, the state parliament decided that extra security measures had to be taken to protect the events. In Köthen, for example, the exact course of the route for the CSD on July 12th will not be published in advance for security reasons. Jentsch also expresses criticism of the bureaucratic hurdles in the organization of such events.

The upcoming CSDs are not only a celebration of diversity, but also a strong sign against discrimination and violent attacks. It remains to be hoped that the first CSD in Wittenberg will run peacefully and send a positive sign for all participants.
