This decisive match took place under special conditions, as Dessau-Roßlauer HV's original victory in the first leg was canceled because a seventh field player was used, while one player had to sit on the bench due to a time penalty. The case was ultimately reviewed by the DHB Federal Court, which led to the decision to repeat the game, as mz.de reports.

The replay represented not only a sporting but also an emotional competition. A defeat would have threatened Dessau-Roßlauer HV with relegation to the third division. Players such as Tillman Leu, Jakub Powarzyński and Alexander Mitrovic were forced to sit out due to injury, while others such as goalkeeper Philipp Ambrosius had just returned from the Maldives.
