Dieter Hallervorden brings Molière to the Central German Theater!

The celebrated comedian and actor Dieter Hallervorden has been 90 years old since September 5, 2025, and his new production of Molière's “The Imaginary Sick” is causing a sensation. On October 30th, the curtain fell on the premiere at the Central German Theater in Dessau, which took the audience into the world of Monsieur Argan, the self-proclaimed sick man. Hallervorden himself takes on the leading role of Argan. With his special style, he brings a breath of fresh air to this classic, which he already played in French in the 1950s. MDR reports that the performance is not only entertaining, but also socially relevant as it addresses the nursing shortage.

Hallervorden's production combines humor and thoughtfulness. Supported by director Philip Tiedemann and a talented ensemble including Christiane Zander and Mario Ramos, the piece is enriched by live music by Peter Lewys Preston. The stage design by Stephan von Wedel and the precious costumes by Viola Matthies round off the overall work of art. A classic reinterpreted

Molière's farce revolves around Monsieur Argan, who allows himself to be taken advantage of by self-proclaimed doctors and pharmacists because he believes he is seriously ill. With a lot of wit and insight, the maid Toinette brings life to the production. The bizarre doctors and the scheming stepmother also provide some humorous moments. As in the original, the character of Argan is portrayed as obsessed with illness, but this performance also sheds light on the serious issues of the current time.

What is striking is that Hallervorden does not provide an understudy for the title role. This not only shows his commitment to the piece, but also his respect for a performance that has a special meaning for him, not least because of his upcoming birthday. The Central German Theater With this new version, it offers a successful mix of tradition and modernity.
