Dieter Hallervorden turns 90: ARD documentary looks behind the scenes!

On September 5th, Dieter Hallervorden, one of Germany's most famous entertainers, will celebrate his 90th birthday. For this special occasion, ARD has announced an exciting 90-minute documentary entitled “Hallervorden – Didi against the rest of the world”. It will be broadcast on Monday, September 1st at 8:15 p.m. on Erste. The documentation will be available in the ARD media library 24 hours in advance MZ.de reported.

The documentary includes exciting insights into Hallervorden's life, including his artist's wardrobe, his Berlin home and his private island in Brittany. What is particularly noteworthy is that detailed interviews with his family can be heard in the documentary for the first time. These personal perspectives offer a unique look at the person behind the artist and shed light on Hallervorden's childhood in Dessau and his escape from the GDR.

Turning points and challenges

The documentary not only presents the humorous facets of Hallervorden, but also addresses more serious aspects of his career. From the beginning, which was marked by rejections at drama schools, to his breakthrough as a goofball comedian and his return to cabaret - the film shows turning points in his life. It also depicts Hallervorden's struggle to free himself from his comedic image, which led him to take on serious roles in films such as His Last Race and Honey in the Head. How DWDL explains, the documentary is not intended to be a nostalgic look back, but rather a “film about struggles”.

Hallervorden recently made headlines for controversy during an ARD anniversary show, where he denounced Chancellor Friedrich Merz for his controversial statement. Such events help Hallervorden remain in the conversation and prove his relevance as an artist.

Theater in Dessau

Dieter Hallervorden is not only a celebrated entertainer, but also an honorary citizen of his hometown Dessau-Roßlau since 2007. There he runs the Central German Theater, where he regularly appears on stage. The theater's fourth season starts in September, which will certainly reflect its upcoming birthday. For the audience, he remains a real “fighter” and tireless artist, even at 90 years old.

At the end of the documentary, the feature film “His Last Race” will be broadcast on September 5th, in which Hallervorden plays the role of a former Olympic champion. It is a fitting legacy for his birthday that perfectly complements his work and shows how deeply rooted he still is in German culture.
