Great joy in Dessau-Roßlau: new sports hall opened!
There is reason to be happy in Dessau-Roßlau! On June 27, 2025, the new sports hall on Damaschkestrasse was officially opened. Mayor Dr. Robert Reck symbolically handed over the key to Torsten Ceglarek, board member of the Dessau-Roßlau city sports association, and Michael Teichert, headmaster of the Walter-Gropius-Gymnasium. A new chapter in the city's sporting infrastructure was inaugurated with a ceremonial ribbon cutting.
This new double sports hall, which was built directly on the school grounds of the Walter-Gropius-Gymnasium, is the result of comprehensive planning that was approved by the city council in September 2020. The implementation included necessary preparatory measures for construction such as felling trees and lowering the groundwater before the actual construction work could begin on June 26, 2023. The interior work then initiated the finishing touches to this important sporting facility from August 2024.
Investment for future athletes
The sports hall became necessary to meet the growing demand in popular and competitive sports. Mayor Reck emphasized how important this facility is for closing the gap in sports provision in Dessau. Appropriate sports infrastructure was a long overdue step, especially for the Dessau-Süd catchment area.
The total investment amount of 12.5 million euros reflects the commitment that was put into expanding the sports facilities. Thanks at this point go to everyone involved who accompanied the construction project and successfully implemented it. The funding was provided through the program for “Promotion of municipal sports facility construction and club sports facility construction”, which was approved in 2022 and represents valuable support for such projects.
A place for community
The new Zweidsporthalle is more than just a building: it is intended to provide an important place for the promotion of children's and competitive sports. Sports such as floorball, basketball, handball and volleyball in particular have gained momentum in recent years. An example of this is PSV 90 Dessau-Anhalt e.V., which can proudly look back on two German championships and a total of 46 championship titles. Over 200 members are active in floorball, including numerous students from the Walter-Gropius-Gymnasium who were honored for their sporting achievements at the opening.
The new sports hall will not only be used for competitive sports, but will also serve as a place for popular and recreational sports as well as to improve school physical education. This makes it an important part of social life in Dessau-Roßlau and contributes to strengthening the sense of community. Well-equipped and barrier-free sports facilities like these are not only crucial for promoting health, but also for sustainable urban development. They offer space for movement and encounters – aspects that are essential in a lively community.
The construction of this sports hall is another step in the right direction to improve the quality of life of citizens in Dessau-Roßlau and to promote sporting opportunities for all age groups. A real win for the city!
