Safe driving in the dark: Cyclists complain about blinding car rides

During the fall season, when the days become shorter and fog covers the roads, many cyclists struggle with the challenges of cycling in dim lighting conditions. Particularly in rural areas, glare from bright headlights from oncoming cars is a recurring problem that not only disrupts visibility but also endangers safety. Daniel Naundorf, an experienced cyclist who covers around 4,000 kilometers a year and commutes ten kilometers to work every day, reported a frightening situation in which the blinding light of a vehicle at dusk severely affected him. Naundorf makes it clear that this challenge is particularly pronounced at dusk, when visibility is already limited.

Frank Brune from the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC) confirms Naundorf's experience and explains that many cyclists are frightened by the blinding lights, prompting some to switch to cars. It is particularly dangerous on one-sided cycle paths along country roads, which are often lowered and in unclear areas. Modern technology with LED and laser light contributes to the risk of glare because the eyes cannot react quickly enough to the sudden changes in light and dark.

Dangerous situations for cyclists

There have already been serious accidents involving cyclists in Saxony-Anhalt in the past, which were caused by the dazzling lighting. To increase safety, the ADFC suggests installing anti-glare systems at critical points. These systems consist of narrow posts that intercept the headlights and are intended to make it easier for cyclists to ride at dusk. Such protective measures are already installed on cycle paths, including the connection between Dessau and Roßlau and on the Elbe bridge in Wittenberg. However, the challenge remains that the installation of anti-glare systems is expensive and cannot be implemented everywhere.

Given this issue, it becomes clear how important it is to raise awareness of the dangers of cycling in autumn and to look for solutions that improve both comfort and safety on the roads. Cyclists should prepare for the challenges presented and be as safe as possible on the roads.

It is noteworthy that despite the uncertainties surrounding cycling, the willingness to get around on two wheels remains high in many regions. This applies to both rural areas and more urban areas, where cyclists often need to maintain a good handle on navigating traffic safely.
