A married couple successfully fights for their dream home in the picturesque Harz!
Amidst the picturesque backdrop of the Harz Mountains, where dense forests and idyllic villages form a magical landscape, Anke and Ulrich Brockhaus from Hildesheim have begun their very personal adventure. In their search for a place to retreat, they found what they were looking for: a charming moat house in the Upper Harz seemed to be the perfect place for relaxation and as a valuable holiday apartment for rent. But the reality turned out to be a series of challenges.
After purchasing the ditch house, the Brockhaus's discovered that there were some unexpected problems. Among other things, the well weakened - the water source fell well short of the required requirements. In addition, there were no essential access rights to the property, which led the couple to search for the previous owners of the house, as they also owned a piece of the required land. A fence from the previous owners, which did not correspond to the actual size of the property, posed a further obstacle. As if that were not enough, access to the house was also blocked via a private path, for which fees had to be paid annually.
Hurdles on the way
The Brockhausers also showed real patience with the sewage treatment plant, which was not registered and led the wastewater “nowhere”. This situation required creativity and persistence as local authorities were unable to help due to data protection regulations. Nevertheless, the two didn't let themselves be disturbed. With intensive research and the know-how of cooperative authorities, they were able to tackle the tricky problems step by step. The most important aspect, however, was that they never entertained the idea of abandoning the moat house.
“I don’t regret the purchase, but my time here shouldn’t just be filled with work,” Anke Brockhaus reflects on the challenges. Despite the complexity of renting a holiday apartment - compliance with various regulations, such as providing fire extinguishing water for the fire brigade - the fun was not neglected either. Positive feedback from guests and the healthy time in the Upper Harz motivated the couple to continue.
We often think about the people who influence our lives. A particularly painful loss occurred last year when Andrew DiDomenico, a dedicated employee of the Connecticut Department of Transportation, died in a tragic accident. The 26-year-old not only left a void in his family, but also in the community. He was known for his strong work ethic, which he demonstrated since the age of 16. Andrew, distinctive with his positive charisma, had a close relationship with his family and friends that stemmed from his passion for sport and his willingness to help others.
A missing friend
After his death, Andrew's parents and sister founded the Andrew DiDomenico Memorial Foundation to honor his memory and help others. Schwartz describes how important it was to keep Andrew's memory alive. There are many who were inspired by his will to live and ability to find joy even in difficult times.
It is remarkable how challenges can create new opportunities - be it in the Harz Mountains or in adult life. It becomes clear that persistence, support from loved ones and a positive attitude are crucial to overcoming difficulties and making the best of every situation. And perhaps that is exactly what Anke and Ulrich Brockhaus, as well as the DiDomenico family, share: the desire to fight, regardless of the adversity.
