Major fire in Sudheim: B3 remains blocked after barn fire!
On the night of Wednesday to Thursday, July 10, 2025, a fire broke out in the historic barn in Sudheim, forcing the fire department to allow the building to burn down in a controlled manner. According to NDR, the barn was filled with straw, which encouraged the fire to spread. Luckily there were no injuries.
The alarm about the barn fire rang at 4:15 a.m. and ensured that the fire brigade, technical relief organization (THW), police and emergency services were on duty immediately. Residents in the area were asked to keep windows and doors closed to protect themselves from the rising smoke. The police estimate the damage caused at up to 70,000 euros, with the current fire in Sudheim being the second in two months; the first resulted in the complete demolition of the affected barn in May.
Closures and traffic disruptions
Due to the extinguishing work, federal highway 3 between Nörten-Hardenberg and Northeim and the adjacent district road had to be closed until late in the evening. Motorists who wanted to bypass the area were advised to use the A7 via the Nörten-Hardenberg and Northeim-West exits. According to Göttinger Tageblatt, this resulted in significant traffic disruptions, which also affected commuters to and from Göttingen.
The fire brigade had to come to terms with difficult conditions on site as the water supply was considered difficult. The THW supported the emergency services by providing 14,500 liters of fire-fighting water and creating paths to prevent the flames from spreading to adjacent areas.
Unclear cause of fire
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, which is why the police have started an investigation. While fires in agricultural buildings are not uncommon, this incident is causing concern among residents, especially since it was only two months ago that a similar fire occurred in Sudheim. Statistics show that fires in rural areas are often due to inadequate fire protection, which makes targeted education necessary. According to FeuerTrutz, it is important to better understand the causes of fires in order to prevent future incidents.
In the meantime, it remains to be seen how long the closures of the affected roads will last and whether further measures will be taken to improve fire safety in the region.
