Insolvency of the Red Cross: Over 450 jobs in Braunschweig at risk!
In a surprising turn of events, the German Red Cross (DRK) in the Braunschweig/Salzgitter region has filed for bankruptcy. The announcement, made on Wednesday, has far-reaching consequences for over 450 employees in the region. However, business operations will continue to run for the time being under the supervision of a property manager. The Braunschweig District Court has also ordered self-administration insolvency proceedings, which gives the DRK the opportunity to restructure itself.
Nico Seefeldt Kazazi, board member of the district association, emphasizes that a renovation concept already exists and that there are good chances for a sustainable recovery. This represents a ray of hope at a time when the organization is facing economic difficulties, mainly caused by the corona pandemic and the increased energy costs following the Russian attack on Ukraine. A planned sale of a former nursing home, which was intended to help stabilize the financial situation, was delayed and played a central role in triggering the bankruptcy.
The affected institutions
The district association, which has existed since 1948, operates a variety of important facilities, including advice and youth centers, care facilities, daycare centers and two rescue stations. Together, these facilities generated an annual turnover of around 20 million euros. The subsidiaries “Care and Support” and “Sprungbrett” are also affected by the insolvency, which makes the situation even more complicated.
- Über 450 Angestellte betroffen
- Sanierung unter Aufsicht eines Sachverwalters
- Einrichtungen laufen ohne Einschränkungen weiter
The company will therefore continue to do business as usual, with the clear aim of achieving financial stability. The employees' salaries are secured by the insolvency benefit from the employment agency, which can take a big worry off your shoulders for the time being.
A look at the insolvency landscape
According to reports, there were approximately 17,800 corporate bankruptcies in Germany in 2023. However, the DRK district association Braunschweig-Salzgitter is not the only one in this critical situation; The insolvency of a district association has an impact on the entire structure, as support from other divisions is only possible to a limited extent. Such a fate is particularly threatening for many organizations outside of Bavaria, as they have to operate economically independently. Statistically speaking, one or two district associations could go bankrupt every year.
The situation surrounding the DRK highlights the challenges that many social institutions face. Employers and managers in this industry often face strong competition, especially when it comes to attracting qualified professionals.
It remains to be seen whether the DRK's restructuring concept can be successfully implemented. One thing is clear, however: the road to financial recovery will certainly not be easy. However, as Nico Seefeldt Kazazi said, the confidence that the restructuring will be successful is palpable.
