Modernization in the Harz Mountain Theater: A new chapter begins!
In a special year for the Harzer Bergtheater Thale, the reopening of the traditional natural stage is imminent. The theater, which was founded in 1903, is one of the oldest natural theaters in Germany and is known for its breathtaking views. After numerous renovations, including after the destruction of the Second World War, the institution is now facing a new chapter. The most recent renovation work, which began in 2020, aims to further develop the mountain theater into a modern high-tech arena without losing the original charm of the traditional natural stage. ARD Mediathek reports that the ceremonial reopening is planned for May 2025.
The extensive renovation work has modernized the theater, which is located on the historic Hexentanzplatz in Thale, and now offers space for more than 1,900 guests - 600 more seats than before. Barrier-free access for wheelchair users was also created, while the stage was equipped with a modern LED wall. The renovation cost a total of around 27.5 million euros and offers the opportunity to host a variety of events such as concerts, theater performances and public viewing. MDR highlights the modernization of event technology, which enables the theater to address a broader audience.
The new musical “Walpurga”
A highlight of the reopening will be the new musical “Walpurga”, which not only celebrates the return of the mountain theater but also delves deep into regional history. The plot revolves around the escape of Walpurga from witch hunters and deals with the memories of the witch burnings of the early modern period. The idea for the musical comes from the actor and composer Enrico Scheffler. The lead role will be seen by the talented Senta-Sofia Delliponti, who has already won an Echo Pop Award. Angelika Milster, a true musical legend, is also part of the ensemble and praises the team spirit and the support of the young talent, who are coming into the theater with a breath of fresh air.
Alida Kulemann, a young actress from Quedlinburg, has also fought for a place in the ensemble, which consists of talented members of the Fairytale association as well as professional actors from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. This diverse cast promises to offer viewers an unforgettable experience.
