Osterode is moving forward: new rail connection to Göttingen and train stop!

The city of Osterode am Harz is embarking on a new era of mobility. With the adoption of a resolution by the city council, the municipality is taking a decisive step towards improved connections to the university city of Göttingen and the further development of the regional infrastructure. The planned “Herzberger Kurve” is intended to establish an hourly direct connection between Osterode and Göttingen on the new RB 89 line and is seen as significant progress for the region. Mayor Jens Augat emphasizes the need for an efficient rail connection and sees improving the connection as crucial for the most important industrial location in the district.

But what exactly is behind this initiative? The aim is to create a half-hourly service in the direction of Göttingen and thus not only make commuting easier, but also contribute to promoting climate-friendly mobility. The city council sees this as an opportunity to significantly improve the connection between the university towns of Göttingen and Clausthal, which could increase the region's attractiveness for students and skilled workers. As part of this initiative, the construction of a new “Osterode West” train stop in the Westharz business park is also on the agenda.

New connections and points of criticism

With the “Osterode West” stop, the city is pursuing the goal of reducing commuting by car and supporting the transport transition. In this context, the city council criticizes the “Highest Railway for the Southern Harz” initiative because the proposed alternatives, such as maintaining the existing bus connection, are considered incomprehensible. Support for the central demands of EIN HARZ GmbH for the design of rail transport in the region was expressed in order to ensure the connection to long-distance transport and an improvement of the existing local transport connections.

But what is the overall status of the rail infrastructure in Lower Saxony? The region has important north-south and east-west connections that contribute significantly to the rail network and have long been overloaded. According to a comprehensive concept, these infrastructure measures must be expanded sustainably in order to increase the attractiveness of rail. Not only is the expansion of the main traffic axes and junction stations crucial, but also the reactivation of disused railway lines for local rail passenger transport.

Steps towards a sustainable future

An important point is the planned electrification of various routes, which must be promoted as part of the transport and climate change. Measures such as creating alternatives to diesel engines and enabling barrier-free connections to all train stations are also part of this future-oriented plan. There are currently 282 train stations in Lower Saxony, 78% of which are barrier-free - but continued expansion of accessibility is also on the agenda.

The city council of Osterode am Harz has laid the first stone with the resolution on the Herzberger Curve, and many citizens and commuters are hoping for these initiatives to be implemented soon. The need for a modern and efficient rail network for the development of the city and the entire region is undisputed, and the coming years could be crucial for rail transport in the Harz and beyond.
