Animal protection in the Harz: A healthy soul gives animals a new life!

In idyllic Bad Sachsa, near the picturesque Harz, something extraordinary is happening. The Heile Seele animal shelter, headed by Ann-Christin Pabst since 2019, has set itself the goal of offering animals with physical and mental limitations a new, loving home. Over 200 animals live here on around two hectares: goats, sheep, horses, cattle, dogs, cats as well as ducks and geese.

At Heile Seele there are stories full of hope. Without this special place, many of the animals might have been sentenced to death. Pabst emphasizes that all animals have a deep desire for family, love and joy of life. There is hard work on the farm every day; 18-hour days are often not uncommon in summer time. Pabst's commitment was able to bring about impressive progress in animals, as shown by the example of Maggy the sheep, who suffers from epileptic seizures, or Heidi the goat, who became blind due to a bacterial eye infection but has now discovered a special ability to open gates.

Challenges and support

The animal sanctuary is financed through seminars on animal communication, donations of money and goods, and animal sponsorships. The high expenditure of time and personnel should not be underestimated, and the federal government plans to support animal shelters and sanctuaries with investments. This is particularly important because awareness of animal welfare is growing and more and more people are getting involved with monetary donations and sponsorships.

However, there are also downsides. Sanctuaries can be subject to abuse, where donations may not benefit the animals or the health of the animals may be a secondary concern. Lisa Kainz from Peta describes sanctuaries as places that help animals and promote awareness of how to treat them respectfully. It is clear that when choosing a sanctuary, transparency and a personal visit are essential to ensure animal welfare, as is also emphasized on health advice.

Education and responsibility

The animal protection landscape in Germany is diverse, but not all organizations are transparent and non-profit. Based on an overview of reputable animal protection organizations, which is also highlighted in an article on Pets-Aktuell, you can see where the money actually goes. From the German Animal Welfare Association to FOUR PAWS – Foundation for Animal Welfare, there are many ways in which those interested can get involved. The role of PETA, which is known for its radical approach but is also considered less transparent, is also critically examined here.

The impressive work done at the Heile Seele animal shelter shows how important community support is. Ann-Christin Pabst would like to raise awareness of the fate of animals through her website and other publications and sends a clear message: love for animals should not end with one's own pets.

For all those who want to help animals in need, it is important to pay attention to the origin and conditions of sanctuaries. Because at the end of the day, we should all take responsibility and raise our voices for the most vulnerable in society. Anyone who has ever visited the Heile Seele animal shelter will understand that there is something going on!
