Sad farewell: Two beloved cats lost in the Harz Mountains

Sad news has spread through social networks in the Harz: the two cats Molly and Merle lost their lives in the Quedlinburg animal shelter. The loss not only shocked the care team, but also many animal lovers who were close to the two animals. In a moving Facebook post, the shelter expressed its sadness over the deceased cats, who suffered from a severe neurological disorder and were lovingly cared for for over nine months. However, their health gradually deteriorated and they could hardly stand. The team asked themselves the dark question of whether it was right to let the cats continue to suffer.

After careful consideration, the nurses chose the difficult path to put Molly and Merle out of their suffering. In a veterinary practice in the Harz region, three employees said goodbye to the two cats while they fell asleep gently in their hands. The close bond they developed with the animals during their time caring for them will never be forgotten. This sad episode also sheds light on the deep responsibility that animal shelters assume when it comes to giving animals a dignified life.

Responsibility in animal protection

The case of Molly and Merle once again shows the challenges that animal shelters face every day. Many people may not fully understand the responsibility that comes with owning an animal. Information about species-appropriate animal husbandry and an understanding of the needs of animals play a central role in animal protection. There is a lot of discussion about the topic of animal welfare in Germany, with various aspects coming into focus. For example, the begrip animal welfare is based on the five freedoms that are essential for the well-being of animals: freedom from hunger and thirst, freedom from discomfort, freedom from pain and fear, and the opportunity to express species-specific behavior. These freedoms are a decisive criterion for evaluating the quality of life of animals.

A recent survey showed that a large proportion of consumers are willing to spend more money for better animal husbandry conditions. Around 50 percent of those surveyed said that they were willing to pay higher prices for quality products that are produced in an animal-friendly manner. On the other hand, animal protection organizations such as PETA and the German Animal Welfare Association have taken on important tasks to draw attention to the grievances and demand changes. Through regular donations and civic engagement, animal shelters can be supported so that they can continue to fight for the well-being of animals in the future. In 2023, around 8.3 percent of private donations in Germany went to animal protection, which shows that awareness of these issues is growing.

The case of the two cats has once again highlighted how important it is to advocate for the welfare of animals. Molly and Merle will be remembered, not only for their suffering, but also for the love and commitment they received from their caregivers. It is society's responsibility to ensure that such stories no longer need to be told so often and that every animal is given the chance to live a happy life.
