Forest fire in the Harz: 300 firefighters fight the flames!
There is a lot of boiling going on in the Harz Mountains: Since Sunday evening, around 300 emergency services have been fighting a forest fire above the Grane Dam near Goslar. Everyone's hands are full as the fire front has now expanded from an initial 2 hectares to up to 8 hectares. Despite the intensive extinguishing work, the fire is not yet under control NDR reported.
The flames were quickly contained, but the wind, which according to meteorologists gusts up to 95 km/h, accelerated the spread of the fire, further complicating the situation. Two firefighting helicopters, including the “Hexe”, were sent into action to drop drops of water and fight the fire front. Special vehicles are also on site and spray water directly onto the glowing surfaces.
Area closed, but onlookers encounter resistance
The area between the Granetalsperre and Goslar is largely closed because, according to the authorities, entering is life-threatening not only because of the smoke gases, but also because of possible water drops. The “Nina” warning app informed the population about the risks in the forest areas of Königsberg, Nordberg and Steinberg. However, the fire department criticizes the fact that onlookers are hindering operations by blocking the access routes.
The causes of the fire are still unclear. The repeated lack of rain in recent months, combined with strong winds, has increased the risk of forest fires, especially in Lower Saxony. Current reports show that there is a medium risk of forest fires in several locations in the Harz, with the weather forecast for the afternoon potentially bringing rain — a small ray of hope in a worrying scenario.
A warning at the right time
In recent years, we have seen nationwide turf burning following an increasingly dry and hot climate. Forest fires have spread in Germany, according to a study by Statista shows, not only increased in number, but also in the destruction of areas. In 2023, over 1,200 hectares of land were devastated by fires, with the highest risk occurring in regions such as Brandenburg and Lower Saxony.
The drastically rising temperatures and long-lasting dry periods, which are favored by climate change, lead to an increased risk of forest fires. Every fire not only causes damage to nature and the environment, but also to social and economic structures. A burger shop near the fire-prone area has already been badly damaged, and the fire department even had to tear down the roof structure.
The situation remains tense and the fire brigade hopes that rain and an easing of the weather conditions will come soon in order to finally quell the flames. Until then, we can only hope that the dedicated emergency services can regain control of the situation.
