First groundbreaking ceremony: Niegripper dike renovation for better flood protection
Environment Minister Willingmann breaks ground on the renovation of the Elbe dike in Niegripp and improves flood protection in Jerichower Land.

First groundbreaking ceremony: Niegripper dike renovation for better flood protection
A significant step towards better flood protection began in Niegripp on June 19, 2025. Environment Minister Prof. Dr. Armin Willingmann and the director of the State Office for Flood Protection and Water Management (LHW), Martina Große-Sudhues, turned the first sod for the renovation of the Niegripper dike. This measure is part of an extensive project to repair flood damage and costs around 2.8 million euros, financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) as well as own resources from the state and federal budgets. The declared goal: to significantly increase security for the neighboring communities in the Jerichower Land district.
As magdeburg-klickt.de reports, the dike will be renovated and raised to around 870 meters according to DIN specifications. This also takes into account future subsidence of up to 60 centimeters, which is threatened by salt mining in the region. The renovation work is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026. Particular attention is also paid to improving accessibility in the event of flooding by expanding dike control and dike defense routes.
A look into the past
The need for such measures becomes particularly clear when one thinks back to the devastating flood events. In 2013, the Elbe catchment area was affected by massive floods. Over 145 square kilometers were under water and the population in many towns, especially in Saxony-Anhalt, had to be evacuated. The total economic damage at that time amounted to around 10 billion euros, of which around 5.2 billion euros were in the Elbe catchment area. This tragedy underlines the urgency of effective flood protection, as havelpolder.de reports.
The experiences from the floods in 2002 and 2013 not only made those responsible realize that technical solutions alone are not enough. An increase in extreme weather events, which are also caused by climate change, is currently being observed. This leads to a higher risk of flooding, especially on slopes and coastal areas. Comprehensive flood risk management, which is the focus of the federal and state governments, is therefore extremely important. The results from the floods illustrate this need, which is explained in detail at bundesregierung.de.
Steps into the future
As part of the National Flood Protection Program, which was launched after the floods of 2013, nationwide regulations on water management and flood risk management are to be created. An interdisciplinary approach is pursued that focuses on better flood prevention and the creation of retention areas. The plans are ambitious: the goal is to expand 20,000 hectares of floodplain areas to minimize the risk of future floods.
As you can see, there is still a lot to do. But an important signal was sent with the groundbreaking ceremony in Niegripp. Investments in flood protection are a step in the right direction - not only for the people in the region, but for everyone who lives in the flood areas along the Elbe.
