Flag dispute in Saxony: Schools should fly the German flag!

In Saxony, schools are the focus of a controversial debate: the CDU and the AfD have submitted proposals for schools to be permanently flagged with the German flag. This initiative will be voted on for the first time next week in the Bautzen district, while two days later a similar proposal from the AfD will be discussed in the Erzgebirgskreis. At least in Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, several districts have already ensured that the German flag is hoisted in front of schools. In Saxony, however, the situation is more complicated.

How t online reports, the reality is different in the Zwickau district, where most schools cannot provide permanent flagging due to a lack of flagpoles. In Chemnitz, the city council has commissioned the administration to develop guidelines for flagging municipal buildings - a draft resolution should be available by the third quarter of 2025. At the same time, the city of Dresden refers to the Free State's supervision of public schools, which limits the implementation of such applications in practice.

Symbolism or practical implementation?

Despite the existing applications, there is resistance. The headmaster of the Roland-Gymnasium in Burg in Saxony-Anhalt expressed dissatisfaction with the instruction that public buildings, including schools, must be flagged with the German flag. The support of the CDU and the AfD for such measures is perceived by many as part of symbolic politics. As the News4Teachers reports, the CDU is trying to distance itself from the nationalist undertones of the AfD by also flying the European flag.

The debate over flagging raises questions about the meaning of patriotism and state symbols. Representatives of the student union in Baden-Württemberg, such as Adrian Klant, emphasize that flags are more than just symbols and should stand for values such as home and patriotism. At the same time, others like Deniz Gedik from the Green Youth criticize the idea as “nonsense” and call for more investment in school social work instead of symbolic politics.

Public opinions and perspectives

Opinions on the topic vary widely. While supporters of flagging call for the national flag to be raised regularly throughout Germany to promote German unity and the values of the Basic Law, critics see this as a distraction from urgently needed reforms in the education system. Education Minister Sven Teuber (SPD) is also critical of the issue and emphasizes that it is not just about hanging up a flag, but rather about a reflective awareness among the students.

In summary, it shows that the discussion about flying the German flag in schools is not only a political issue, but also reflects the values and identities of our society in an exciting way. It remains to be seen how the votes in Saxony will develop and what consequences this will have for schools.
