Reading Summer XXL 2025: Ignite children's imagination through exciting books!

The popular “Reading Summer XXL” starts in Saxony-Anhalt and Halle (Saale) on June 21, 2025. This year the event is being held for the 16th time and offers an exciting opportunity to develop children's reading skills. As MDR reports, the little bookworms can look forward to a very special highlight: for the first time, they have a creative logbook at their disposal in which they can record their progress. From collecting stamps to creative representations of your favorite book heroes, everything is possible. The ambitiously designed logbook will be awarded at the end of the reading summer.

The campaign, which is only offered in the Halberstadt city library this season, is to be expanded to the entire state next year. Children are invited to register in the central library and, on a smaller scale, in district libraries, the mobile library and the music library. To obtain a certificate, it is necessary to read and evaluate at least two books during the summer holidays. This certificate can then be registered as a special learning achievement at school. A final event, at which all participants are invited to the celebration, will take place on September 20th, according to the press portal of the city of Halle.

Diverse reading offers and activities

As part of the reading summer, there is also an ideas competition in which the children have to find a city in Saxony-Anhalt with a valuable cathedral treasure. Luzie Schröter, known from the website “Tolles Buch”, will start the reading summer with a performance and introduce six current books to primary school children. These include, among other things, an exciting detective story and a non-fiction book about the difficult topic of dying, which is very popular with children due to its entertaining presentation.

Promoting reading also has greater social significance. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research emphasizes how crucial it is to be able to read well. Reading skills are not only a key to academic success, but also to active participation in life. Committed people from various areas support projects that make it easier for children and young people to access the world of reading. In particular, the “Reading Start 1-2-3” project, which has distributed more than 5 million reading start sets, as well as the initiative for refugee children show how important early reading promotion is.

Parents and reading culture

An important aspect of promoting reading is reading aloud. Luzie Schröter emphasizes the importance of designing reading aloud as an event to awaken children's curiosity. Parents should develop special skills in order to get their children excited about reading. In her reading shows, she often leaves the children wondering how the story will continue, thus encouraging them to actively look for more books themselves.

The Reading Summer XXL is not only an occasion for reading, but also an opportunity for children to expand their imagination and discover new books. True to the motto that reading should not only be important, but also really fun!
