Drama on the Elbe: Yacht burns out – Danish couple in danger!

In the early morning hours of July 17, 2025, there was a spectacular ship fire at the customs bridge in Magdeburg. At around 5 a.m., passers-by first heard a loud bang, followed by heavy smoke drifting over the Elbe. A nine-meter-long pleasure boat belonging to a Danish couple burst into flames after they were unable to reach their marina due to lack of space and anchored between the Editha and Zollbrücke bridges.

The fire department responded with a large contingent. A total of five fire engines, a special emergency boat and several rescue vehicles rushed in to fight the flames. After about an hour the fire was under control and extinguished. Despite the dramatic situation, the damage remained relatively manageable at around 50,000 to 60,000 euros, regional media reports such as mz.de and world.de.

Rescue and injuries

The couple were able to escape to shore in time, but suffered minor injuries and received medical treatment for suspected smoke inhalation. The fire brigade and police were quickly on the scene, and the water police also supported the operation. Due to the heavy smoke, the customs and Editha bridges were temporarily closed and drivers were asked to take alternative routes. The bridges have now been reopened and the situation has calmed down.

Investigations and consequences

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, but the police have not yet been able to provide any further information. However, it can be assumed that the low water levels of the Elbe, which have fallen dramatically in recent weeks, led to difficulties in bringing the yacht to safe harbor in time. The burned-out yacht, which is currently in low water, cannot yet be towed away because no tug can reach the site, explains the fire department.

There have been several significant ship fires in the recent past, some of which had devastating effects on people and the environment. A particularly serious case was the fire on a container ship in Hamburg in 2016, in which 300 firefighters were deployed. These current events also require increased security precautions to prevent similar incidents in the future. A similar incident could quickly lead to a bigger horror scenario, like feuerwehrmagazin.de notes.

The current situation in Magdeburg has clearly shown how important a quick and coordinated response is in an emergency. The emergency services acted quickly and professionally, which prevented anything worse from happening. Nevertheless, the question of the cause remains open and the residents on the banks of the Elbe will certainly follow further developments with excitement.
