Handball legend Michael Damgaard is leaving Magdeburg after 10 years!

A farewell of great importance is imminent: Michael Damgaard, the handball legend of SC Magdeburg, is saying goodbye after ten years with the club. His path takes him back to his home country of Denmark, where he will play for HØJ Elite in the future. This decision was officially announced on June 3, 2023, and the SCM's last home game was both emotional and celebratory, as Damgaard, in addition to the numerous successes with the team, also won the Champions League. Not only the fans, but also the club itself will sorely miss the Dane, who played in Magdeburg since 2015 after moving from Holstebro.

Things are also looking very promising for Damgaard in his new home. HØJ Elite, a first division newcomer, proudly emphasizes the signing of the experienced player. The club has developed a successful culture in recent years that emulates Damgaard's ambitions. Handball World reports that the former Magdeburg player emphasized during his introduction how important the family relationship with the club is to him and that he is ready to give everything for success.

An illustrious career

Michael Damgaard's career is impressive: he won several titles with SC Magdeburg. He celebrated two German championships (2022, 2024), two DHB Cup victories (2016, 2024) and won both the European League and the Champions League. In addition, Damgaard is also a world champion and Olympic champion with the Danish national team. His move to HØJ Elite is not only a step back to the Danish league, but also a sign of his aspirations to continue playing at the highest level.

Stian Tönnesen, the coach of HØJ Elite, is enthusiastic about Damgaard's experience and skills. “A player with his history is a real asset for us,” he said recently. Damgaard's upcoming challenges in the Danish handball league will certainly ensure that fans will be glued to the games.

A new chapter

HØJ Elite, a merger of Ölstykke Håndbold Forening and JGI Håndbold, was founded in 1991 and has enjoyed great success in the past. The club's biggest highlights were promotions to the 1st Division in 2011 and 2013, but promotion to the highest Danish league in 2025 represents a special milestone. In addition, the HØJ Elite women's team also secured direct promotion to the handball league. Min-Danmark shows how deeply rooted handball is in Denmark and that the sport here is more than just a pastime - it is a national passion.

Now everyone is looking forward to the debut season in the Danish handball league, and we are excited to see how the new HØJ Elite team around Michael Damgaard will develop. One thing is certain: handball in Denmark remains exciting, especially with such a prominent figure in the ranks of the new club.
